SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH JUNIATA
HUNTINGDON, PA
– The Lycoming College softball team took a break from
conference competition, Tuesday afternoon, to travel to Juniata
College for a doubleheader. The Warriors split with the Eagles,
dropping the first game 8-0 but rebounding to win the second game
4-0. Lycoming is now 18-10-1 overall this season. Juniata moves to
18-5.
In the opening
game of the twinbill the Warriors fell behind early, giving up
three runs in the first inning and five runs in the second.
Lycoming’s offense never responded picking up just three hits in
the ballgame. Marianne Simpson (So./Camp Hill, PA; Camp Hill)
tallied two of those hits, and Jen Shaffer (Jr./Waterville, PA;
Jersey Shore) recorded the third.
Kristen
Reese (Fr./Centre Hall, PA; State College)
started the game and suffered the loss. She allowed eight runs on
six hits in two innings of work. Amanda Gery (So./Whitehall,
PA; Whitehall) pitched two innings of scoreless relief,
allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
In the
nightcap, it was the Warriors that did all the scoring. Lycoming
got started in the fourth inning with a two-out single by Amy
Curry (So./Fallentimber, PA; Moshannon Valley). Miranda
Newcomer (Jr./Newfoundland, PA; Wallenpaupack) followed with a
double that moved Curry to third. Katy Kresge (Jr./Lehighton,
PA; Marian Catholic) then drove home the first run of the game
on a single. Newcomer also came around to score on an error by the
centerfielder.
The Warriors
added two more runs in the fifth inning. Christine Warholic
(Jr./Eldersburg, MD; Liberty) and Simpson led off the inning
with a pair of singles and advanced one base each on a sacrifice
by Jana Reitz (Fr./Waynesboro, PA; Waynesboro). Jess
Feerrar (Sr./Lock Haven, PA; Lock Haven) then hit a sacrifice
fly that plated Warholic to give Lycoming a 3-0 advantage. Jackie
Chestnut (Fr./Williamsport, PA; Williamsport) followed with an
RBI double to end the scoring in the game.
Morgan
Mantle (Fr./Jersey Shore, PA; Jersey Shore)
pitched seven innings, giving up just three hits and striking out
10 to record her eighth victory of the season.
The Warriors
play their final regular season doubleheader on Saturday, April
26, when they host Delaware Valley College at 1 p.m.
