LYCOMING SOFTBALL SWEEPS PENN STATE ALTOONA

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College softball team hosted Penn State Altoona, Sunday afternoon, for a non-conference doubleheader. The Warriors picked up a pair of wins, defeating the Cougars 5-1 in the first game and 3-2 in the second game. Lycoming improves to 13-8 overall with the victories. Penn State Altoona drops to 11-7.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening game and never looked back behind the strong pitching of Amanda Gery (Fr./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall). Gery allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings, while striking out eight.

Amy Curry (Fr./Fallentimber, PA; Moshannon Valley) led the offense by driving in three runs. Adrienne Wydra (Sr./Ashland, PA; North Shcuylkill) collected three hits in the game while Marianne Simpson (Fr./Camp Hill, PA; Camp Hill) and Katie Kresge (So./Lehighton, PA; Marian Catholic) each added two hits.

Kresge was the hero of the second game driving in the game-winning run with a bloop single in the bottom of the seventh after the two teams had been deadlocked at 2-2. Miranda Newcomer (So./Newfoundland, PA; Wallenpaupack) had two hits in the game and drove in a run. Curry had a double and an RBI, and Wydra scored two runs including the game winner.

Gery recorded her second victory of the day, tossing the final two innings in relief of Crystal Hampton (So./Catawissa, PA; Southern Columbia). Hampton went five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out a pair. Gery did not allow a hit in her brief appearance.

Lycoming will be at home again for their next contest as they host Juniata College on Wednesday, April 10. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
