WARRIOR
SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH ROYALS
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College softball team hosted the University of
Scranton, Saturday afternoon, for a conference doubleheader. The
Warriors dropped the first game of the twin bill 5-3 in extra
innings, but rebounded to win the nightcap, 2-1. Lycoming is now
11-8 overall and 5-3 within the MAC Freedom Conference. Scranton
moved to 5-6 and 1-1.
In the opening
game, the Royals got on the board first with two runs in their
half of the second inning. The Warriors, however, responded with
two runs of their own in the second to tie the game up. Scranton
moved ahead with a single run in the fourth, but again Lycoming
knotted the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The
score remained even until the eighth inning when the Royals pushed
across two runs and held the Warriors scoreless to tally the win.
Seven different
players recorded hits for Lycoming. Jen Shaffer
(So./Waterville, PA; Jersey Shore) scored a run and drove in
another. Dara Dietrich (Sr./Pitman, PA; Tri-Valley) and Gloria
Neeld (So./Sewell, NJ; Washington Twp.) also scored for the
Warriors.
Amanda Gery
(Fr./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall)
suffered the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits while striking
out eight batters. Sarah Rhodes (So./Short Hills, NJ; Millburn)
recorded the victory for Scranton.
In the second
game, the Royals again posted the contest’s first run with a
tally in the fifth inning. Lycoming again answered immediately
with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Warriors
went on to notch the victory in their final at-bat when Jess
Feerrar (Jr./Lock Haven, PA; Lock Haven) singled to center
field to bring home the winning run from third. In addition to
Feerrar’s single, Dietrich, Neeld, Amy Curry (Fr./Fallentimber,
PA; Moshannon Valley), Miranda Newcomer (So./Newfoundland,
PA; Wallenpaupack), and Crystal Hampton (So./Catawissa, PA;
Southern Columbia) all hit safely for Lycoming.
Hampton also
picked up the complete game win from the mound. Tracy Granozio
(Fr./Liverpool, NY; Liverpool) suffered the loss for Scranton.
The Warriors
are right back at it tomorrow afternoon when they host Penn State
Altoona. The non-conference doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
