LYCOMING SOFTBALL FALLS BY ONE TO DREW

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Lycoming College softball team suffered their second consecutive one-run loss in the Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference playoffs, Saturday morning, falling to Drew University 4-3. The Warriors held a 3-1 lead through five innings, but gave up three runs in the Rangers’ final two at-bats to drop the decision and be eliminated from the tournament. Lycoming completes to 2002 campaign with a record of 17-17.

The Warriors got off to a fast start with two runs in the first inning. Adrienne Wydra (Sr./Ashland, PA; North Schuylkill) and Marianne Simpson (Fr./Camp Hill, PA; Camp Hill) each singled to lead of the inning and then stole a base to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jess Feerrar (Jr./Lock Haven, PA; Lock Haven) then doubled to left-center field to drive home both runs. Drew got one run back in their half of the first when Debbie Waz singled home Tara Duffy with two outs.

Lycoming extended their lead back to two runs in the fourth inning. Melinda Dicken (Fr./Fairfield, PA; Fairfield) scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Gery (Fr./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall). The Rangers then tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs on just two singles and an error by the Warriors.

After a scoreless seventh by Lycoming, Kristen Mignoli led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the leftfield line. The Warriors were able to record two outs, but a single by Alexandria McCaffrey plated Mignoli handing Lycoming their second walk-off defeat in as many games.

Gery went the distance on the mound for the Warriors, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Erica Mehalick got the win for the Rangers, scattering seven hits and three runs while striking out four. Drew advances to play Scranton for the right to challenge defending champion King’s College for the 2002 title.
