PAIR OF HOMERUNS KEYS LYCOMING SOFTBALL SWEEP

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College softball team hosted Wilkes University, Saturday afternoon, for a key conference doubleheader. The Warriors won both games by scores of 2-1 on the strength of two-run homeruns in each contest. The victories move Lycoming’s record to 15-10 overall and 7-3 within the conference. The Colonels fall to 16-10 and 3-7.

In the opening game, the Warriors got all their offense in their first turn at bat. With the first two batters retired Jessica Feerrar (Jr./Lock Haven, PA; Lock Haven) singled to extend the inning. Amy Curry (Fr./Fallentimber, PA; Moshannon Valley) took advantage connecting for her third homerun of the season to put Lycoming ahead 2-0. Wilkes got a run back in the third inning but could not tie or take the lead against Amanda Gery (Fr./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall). Gery worked all seven innings, allowing just three hits and a run while striking out five batters.

In the second game, neither team could create any offense through the first five innings. The Warriors finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning following a lengthy rain delay. Similar to the first game, Marianne Simpson (Fr./Camp Hill, PA; Camp Hill) drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and then came home on a home run to deep center field by Feerrar. The Colonels attempted a comeback in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff double, but it was not to be as they could only push across one run.

Laurie Rooney (So./Audubon, NJ; Audubon) started the ballgame on the mound, working three innings allowing just two hits. Crystal Hampton (So./Catawissa, PA; Southern Columbia) gave up four hits in two innings of relief. Gery tossed the final two innings for the win, giving up one hit and one run.

Lycoming is right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Delaware Valley College.
