Warriors Pick Up Second Straight Victory
Doubles Wins Seal Triumph Over Scranton

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Lycoming men’s tennis benefited from strong doubles play on Saturday afternoon, picking up victories at the #1 and #2 spots to win the final point and defeat the University of Scranton 4-3 for the Warriors’ second straight conference triumph.  Lycoming improves to 3-4 overall, 2-3 in the Freedom Conference.  The Royals fall to 1-7, 0-5.

With the match tied 3-3 following six split singles tilts, Lycoming’s #1 doubles team of junior Michael Byerly (West Milton, Pa./Lewisburg) and freshman John Stutzman (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) got things rolling with a narrow 8-6 victory over Daniel Kiers and Mike Clark.  Sophomores Craig Ayers (Milton, Pa./Milton) and John Scarangello (Nazareth, Pa./Pen Argyl) secured the doubles point for the Warriors, but needed a few extra tallies to get there.  Scranton’s Paurush Shah and Erik Lenhart played straight-up with the Warriors’ #2 tandem, but Ayers and Scrangello eventually picked up the final point they needed to win 9-7.

In singles action, the Royals nabbed both the first and second position matches, but Lycoming responded with victories at three and four.  Stutzman took care of Shah 6-4, 7-5 in a hotly contested battled, and Scarangello bested Lenhart 6-3, 6-2 for a sound victory.

Scranton managed to pull ahead with a win at #5 singles, but junior Nick Nastasi (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Reg.) evened the singles match ups with a 6-2, 6-2 torching of Robert Niosi.

Lycoming looks to make it three straight on Wednesday, April 12, as the Warriors welcome Wilkes University to Williamsport for the final regular season match.  Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Bruce Henry Park.
