Lycoming Loses In Final Minutes at Wilkes Warriors Miss Bid for Consecutive Upsets EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.—The men’s soccer team (2-4-2) lost its bid for a second straight upset on Wednesday. Highly regarded Wilkes University (7-2) bettered the visiting Warriors 1-0 on a late goal by Bret Osswald.
Lycoming goalkeeper Matt Klipp (Collegeville, PA) recorded 6 saves on the day, but could not hold off Osswald, who scored with just 3:35 remaining in the match. Osswald beat Lycoming’s sweeper, then slipped a shot past Klipp on an exciting one-on-one play that broke a scoreless tie. The loss drops the Warriors to 0-2 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes is 2-0.
Although the Warriors excelled in the second half, the team barely missed upsetting consecutive ranked opponents. Last Saturday, the Warriors topped nationally ranked Elizabethtown 1-0 in a home field nail biter. For a young team, such victories are a sign of good things to come.
Lycoming’s next match will be against FDU-Florham on Saturday, September 30 at Shangraw Athletic Complex at high noon.
