Men's Soccer

Lycoming Upsets Nationally Ranked Elizabethtown

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming’s Men’s Soccer team (2-3-2) upset nationally ranked Elizabethtown (5-2-1) Saturday afternoon at Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Warriors’ were previously 0-41-1 against Elizabethtown and their 1-0 victory has fans and players abuzz. “This is a very big win for us,” said Head Coach Scott Kennell. “We have a young team and I’m glad that we’re coming together.

Freshman Chris Lorenzet (Forest Hill, Md.) missed an early scoring opportunity when his first period shot bounced off the crossbar. But sophomore midfielder Matt Frey (Greensboro, Md.) found the net on a bang-bang play in the game’s 58th minute. Frey collected freshman Zack Frederick’s (West Chester, Pa.) deflected shot and slipped the ball past Elizabethtown goalie A. J. Fleisher for the match’s sole goal.

One score was all Lycoming needed as first-year goalkeeper Matt Klipp (Collegeville, Pa.) shutout the visiting Blue Jays with six saves. Perhaps his most exciting stop came with ten minutes left in the game. Elizabethtown’s Tom Reinmiller headed a crossed ball toward the net and Klipp gloved the shot with lightning quick reflexes to preserve the Warriors’ lead.

Saturday’s win is arguably the biggest in Lycoming men’s soccer history. Only once in recent memory have the Warriors defeated a nationally ranked opponent. With a slew of contributing underclassmen, including five starting freshmen, the future looks bright for Coach Kennell’s squad. The young Warriors hope to continue their winning trend this Wednesday, September 27, when they travel to regional powerhouse Wilkes for a 4:00 p.m. start.
