Warriors Can’t Pull The Upset                                                   Second-Ranked Messiah Proves Too Deep For Lycoming

Klipp In ActionWILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—The Warrior soccer team (3-6-3) lost to visiting Messiah (11-0-1) on Wednesday by a score of 5-1. While the margin looks lopsided, even the nationally ranked Falcons might agree that looks can be deceiving. Lycoming played with marked intensity from the start, but Messiah’s bench simply proved too deep.

After upsetting nationally ranked Elizabethtown on September 23, the Warriors were anxious to play spoiler again. Messiah broke a long scoreless tie in the 36th minute when Ryan Edwards chipped a shot through a crowd in front of the goal. Lycoming answered less than four minutes later as Paul Boucher (Hauppauge, NY) found the back of the net when the Falcons defense failed to clear.

Tanner The WarriorThe Warriors continued to match Messiah’s intensity up and down the field, holding Kai Kasigurin—the 2005 NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player—scoreless for the contest. But the four-time national champion Falcons don’t rely on one star. In fact, Kasigurin played only 47 minutes on the day. Instead, the Falcons kept substituting fresh legs, using 24 different players in the match. All of their goals were scored by substitutes. Patrick Linehan led his team with two goals, scoring one just before the half to put Messiah up 2-1.

Lycoming came out inspired for the second period, maintaining a one point differential until Linehan scored again in the 69th minute. Messiah controlled the tempo for most of the match, taking 24 shots. But Warrior goalkeepers Matt Klipp (Collegeville, PA) and Ryan Humphreys (Boonton Township, NJ) played admirably against the onslaught. Likewise, Lycoming’s midfield presence kept things from getting out of hand until late in the contest.

Messiah would not score again until under four minutes to play. By then, the Warriors looked spent, occasionally rising up to attack, but mostly playing preventative defense. Ultimately, Lorenzet Battlesthe Falcons, ranked second nationally by both the NSCAA and D3kicks.com, had too much firepower. However, Messiah will surely keep an eye on the Warriors, who become a Commonwealth Conference foe next season. Lycoming’s youth and tenacity was obvious on Wednesday and these two programs are destined to clash again.

The Warriors travel to Drew on Saturday October 14 and to PSU-Berks on Monday. Their next home match will be Thursday, October 19 against King’s College at Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3:00 p.m.
