Box Score
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa. --- A day after being rained out of its opening season
contest, the Lycoming men’s soccer nearly made up for the missed
time by earning a 2-2 tie with Penn
State-Altoona
that carried through a pair of overtime frames totaling 110
minutes of play. The Warriors’ record stands at 0-0-1 with the
Lions’ posting a 0-1-1 mark.
Lycoming let a
two-goal first half lead slip away in the second frame on the
way to the deadlock, the first even result for the blue and gold
in two seasons. The last Warrior tie came via a 1-1 score line
against Juniata College nearly two years ago (Sept. 15, 2005).
Freshman
Mike Coates (Washington, N.J.) put the Warriors on top just
short of 18 minutes into the contest. The swift-footed attacker
collected a volley from fellow first year midfielder Chris
Lorenzet (Forest Hill, Md.) eight yards from goal and
skidded a low left-footed shot to the far post past the keeper.
Lorenzet picked
up his second assist, this time touching the ball to junior
captain Zach Tanner (Waynesboro, Pa.) on an in-direct
free kick in the 29th minute. Tanner hammered a
crushing strike from 25-yards away, leaving the goalkeeper with
little chance to react let alone make a save.
PSU-Altoona
added its first tally on penalty kick less than eight minutes in
to the second frame, and collected the tying goal 17 minutes
later on a nicely tucked strike by Corey Suter.
Freshman
goaltender Matt Klipp (Collegeville, Pa.) was outstanding
in his first collegiate match, recording 12 saves to keep the
Lions at bay. He came up big twice during extra time, charging
off his line just enough to cut down the angle and save a pair
of one-on-one attempts with a PSU-A striker.
Klipp was
joined by junior marking back Rob Bailey (Bel Air, Md.)
and freshman winger Zach Frederick (West Chester, Pa.) as
the Warriors’ selected to the all-tournament team. Josh
Guthridge, Bryan Pierzga, and Dan Saxton earned tourney honors
for the Lions.
Lycoming is
next in action Friday, September 8, at the annual “Battle of the
Boot” contest with Susquehanna University. Game time is set for
7:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove. |
