WARRIOR MEN’S SOCCER RETURNS FAVOR; DEFEATS DESALES IN PLAYOFFS

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s soccer team exacted some revenge, Tuesday afternoon, at DeSales University. The Warriors defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1, in a semifinal match of the Freedom Conference playoffs – just one year after DeSales had knocked Lycoming from the playoffs.

The Warriors (14-4-1) dominated the first half, out-shooting the Bulldogs (12-8) 12-4. Andrew Rampulla (Jr./Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Cumberland Valley) put Lycoming ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute, outracing a pair of DeSales defenders to a goal kick and sliding it past a charging keeper for the goal.

In the second half, momentum shifted as the Bulldogs controlled much of the action, out-shooting the Warriors 10-2. Lycoming, however, was still able to increase their lead to 2-0 when Andrew Weber (Jr./Ambler, Pa.; Upper Dublin) scored the eventual game-winner in the 67th minute. Weber received a pass on the right side and created enough space to bend a shot over the outstretched hand of the DeSales keeper.

The Bulldogs cut their deficit in half, just four minutes later when Kevin Moore (Sr./Hockessin, Del.; Salesianum) headed in a goal off a throw-in by James Hasher (Sr./Philadelphia, Pa.; Father Judge) and another header by John Rennie (Sr./Cape May Court House, N.J.; Middle Township).

Jason Fesler (Sr./Carlisle, Pa.; Cumberland Valley) was again excellent in goal for the Warriors, making four saves – all in the second half – to preserve the one-goal victory. Tigh Savercool (Fr./Millerstown, Pa.; Greenwood) and Brad Ferguson (Fr./Galloway, N.J.; St. Joseph) split time in net for DeSales. Savercool made five saves in the first half. Ferguson played the second half, but did not record a save.

With the victory, Lycoming advances to the Freedom Conference championship match. The Warriors will travel to Drew University, who defeated Wilkes University, 6-1, in the other semifinal match. The title match will be played on Saturday, November 6, at a time to be announced.
