WARRIOR
MEN’S SOCCER HAS SEASON END IN SEMIFINALS
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s soccer team had their
season come to an end, Thursday evening, in the semifinals of
the Freedom Conference playoffs. The second-seed Warriors hosted
third-seed DeSales University at the Pennsylvania College of
Technology soccer field. Lycoming held the Bulldogs to just one
goal through 89 minutes of play, but could not score a goal of
their own. DeSales added an empty-net goal with 20 seconds to
play to make the final score 2-0. The Warriors fall to 15-5 on
the season. The Bulldogs improve to 12-7 and advance to the
Freedom Conference championship match at Drew University on
Saturday, November 8.
The two teams
played a scoreless first half, but DeSales broke through for the
first goal of the contest just two minutes into the second
period. Junior forward John
Rennie (Cape May, N.J.; Lower Cape May) took a pass from Joe
Bodnik (Sr./Philadelphia, Pa.; Archbishop Ryan) and broke
past the Lycoming defense. He then placed the ball just under
the crossbar as the Warrior goalkeeper moved out to attempt the
save.
Lycoming
increased the pressure in the final 20 minutes and had scoring
opportunities but could not find the back of the net. With just
under two minutes to play, the Warriors substituted for the
goalkeeper to bring on an extra attacker. The Bulldogs, however,
gained possession of the ball near midfield and Bryce
Wolfenden (So./Coopersburg, Pa.; Southern Lehigh) booted the
ball towards Lycoming’s goal. The ball rolled across the
goal-line with 18.9 seconds showing on the clock to seal the
result.
Jason
Fesler (Jr./Carlisle, Pa.; Cumberland Valley)
made two saves in net for the Warriors. Ryan
Karasow (So./Hatboro, Pa.; Upper Moreland) recorded four
saves in goal for DeSales.
