BONNES BROTHERS
LEAD LYCOMING MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM TO VICTORY
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– For perhaps the first time in NCAA history, a trio of brothers
started a lacrosse game at the same position. Michael, Ryan and
Shaun Bonnes, of Ridley Park, Pa., and graduates of Ridley
Senior High School, all started at the attack position for the
Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team against King’s College,
Monday afternoon. The three siblings proved that talent runs deep
in their family as they combined for 12 goals and seven assists,
leading the Warriors to a 23-3 Middle Atlantic Conference victory.
Lycoming came
storming out of the gates against the Monarchs, scoring 11 goals
in the first quarter. The Bonnes’ played a part in all 11 goals
with Shaun, a freshman, recording five goals in the period, Ryan,
a sophomore, scoring two goals and assisting on another; and
Michael, a senior, scoring two goals and recording three assists.
All three of Michael’s assists were to one of his brothers.
The Warriors
continued to roll throughout the game, posting six goals in the
second quarter, two in the third and four in the fourth. King’s
managed a goal in the second quarter and two goals in the third.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton),
Christian Willaum (Fr./New Milford, CT; New Milford), Sean
Powers (Fr./Drexel Hill; Monsignor Bonner) and Jon Bennitt
(Jr./Painted Post, NY; Corning-Painted Post West) all saw time
in goal for Lycoming. They combined for 12 saves and allowed three
goals.
The Monarchs’
goals were scored by Chris Reilly, Scott Jepsen and Terrence
Reilly. Peter Lukesh played the first half in goal for King’s,
allowing 17 goals and making six saves. Mike Mattavi finished in
the Monarchs’ net making eight saves while giving up six goals.
“This game was
all about the Bonnes brothers. There are not many teams out there
with three bothers and I think it is something special,” said
Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “Michael has had a great career
here at Lycoming. He is the all-time leading goal scorer for the
program, but today he stepped back and let his brothers share the
limelight. Ryan is a terrific teammate and a great person. Today
was a great day for him. Shaun is a good player with strong stick
skills who has a tremendous future ahead of him.
“The Bonnes
family has been great supporters of our program. They travel to
every away game and are always at the home games. I’m very happy
for the whole family today.”
The Warriors take
a break from conference action on Wednesday, when they travel to
Keuka College. Lycoming improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 within the
MAC with today’s win. King’s fell to 1-6 and 0-6.
