WARRIOR MEN’S LACROSSE HAS SEASON COME TO AN END

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The most successful season in the five-year history of the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse program came to an end Saturday afternoon. The Warriors, hosting the Middle Atlantic Conference championship, fell to Messiah College, 18-10. With the victory, the Falcons receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament beginning next Wednesday.

Messiah took an early lead scoring the first two goals of the game. Lycoming got on the board when Buddy Temple (Jr./Webster, NY; Webster) banged home an unassisted goal with 6:45 to play in the first. The Falcons answered with another goal to carry a 3-1 advantage into the second period.

Messiah took control of the game by posting four more unanswered goals in the first six minutes of the second quarter to open up a 7-1 lead. Michael Bonnes (Sr./Ridley Park; Ridley Senior) scored back-to-back goals for the Warriors to pull within four, but Lycoming would get no closer. Every time the Warriors seemed to gain some momentum, the Falcons responded with a goal of their own.

Temple and Sang Duong (Fr./Havertown; Haverford Township) each scored three goals for Lycoming. Bonnes added two goals and three assists. Jason Weisenborn led Messiah with six goals and two assists. Connor Pett chipped in four goals and an assist.

Jared Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton) played the majority of the game in goal for the Warriors making 21 saves, while facing 51 shots. Justin Moe was between the pipes for the Falcons. He made 10 saves, facing 25 shots. In addition to being out-shot by Messiah, Lycoming also won just 13 face-offs to the Falcons’ 19 and picked up 36 groundballs to Messiah’s 50.

The Warriors finish the 2001 campaign with a record of 12-4. The Falcons improved to 11-4 overall and will play again on Wednesday, May 9, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
