MEN’S LACROSSE GETS OFF TO FAST START

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team kicked off the 2001 season with a 15-5 win over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, March 3. Senior attack Michael Bonnes (Ridley Park; Ridley Senior) led the effort for the Warriors with a game-high eight goals.

Lycoming jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:08 into the contest on an unassisted goal by freshman Sang Duong (Havertown; Haverford Township). Less than two minutes later, Randolph-Macon answered with a goal of their own. The Warriors then went on a 7-0 run over the next 16:30.

Lycoming out-shot the Yellow Jackets 38-32, and had a 49-30 ground ball advantage. The Warriors also won 14-of-24 face-offs.

“We are very happy to start the season off with a great win against a good team. The players played hard and very aggressive, setting the tone early in the game,” said head coach Gene Peluso. “We had some solid performances from our seniors. Mark Barnes controlled the middle of the field and won some key face-offs and ground balls. Jared Jankowski was a wall in goal and Mike Bonnes was a true leader on offense.”

“ I was also pleased to see two freshmen step up early in their careers. Sang Duong and Dave Dormond really helped our offense throughout the game,” continued Peluso. “Now we need to get ready for a very talented SUNY-Oneonta squad. Oneonta, a top-20 team, will be another good test for us early in the season.”

The Warriors play Oneonta at the University of Scranton on Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m.
