MEN’S LACROSSE DOUBLES UP FDU-MADISON
ADVANCES TO MAC
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– Dave Dormond (Fr./Bryn Mawr; Haverford Township) and Dan
Wilcox (Fr./Corning, NY; Corning-Painted Post East) each
scored three goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse
team to a 16-8 win over FDU-Madison in the semifinals of the
Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs, Wednesday afternoon. The
victory advances the Warriors to the MAC championship game on
Saturday, May 5.
Lycoming scored
the opening goal of the game only to have FDU come back with a
pair of goals to take an early 2-1 lead. The Warriors answered
with a pair of goals of their own to lead 3-2 at the end of one
quarter. The Devils opened up their largest lead of the game with
three goals to open the second period. But again Lycoming answered
scoring the final three goals of the period to maintain a one-goal
advantage at the half.
The Warriors blew
the game open in the third quarter, out-scoring FDU 6-1.
Lycoming’s six goals to open the second half gave them nine
unanswered goals over a span of 14:27. Brett Lapides scored three
goals for the Devils down the stretch but could not pull his team
closer as the Warriors added four goals in the final period.
“FDU played
tough in the first half. They mixed up their defense and really
had us guessing,” said Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “But
we made some adjustments at the half, figured some things out and
got our offense going in the third. The six goals in the third
quarter proved to be the difference in a what was a close game at
that point.”
In addition to
the offense of Dormond and Wilcox, Mark Barnes (Sr./Elmira, NY;
Corning-Painted Post East), Michael Bonnes (Sr./Ridley
Park; Ridley Senior) and Sang Duong (Fr./Havertown;
Haverford Township) each added two goals. Bonnes also tallied
three assists. Buddy Temple (Jr./Webster, NY; Webster)
chipped in a goal and two assists.
Lapides was
FDU’s leading scorer with three goals and an assist. Brett
Starger, Timothy Rogler and Steven Saltini each added a goal and
an assist.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton)
played the entire game between the pipes for Lycoming, making 14
saves. Justin Fawley went the distance in goal for the Devils,
stopping 12 shots-on-goal.
“Mark Barnes
played an outstanding game in the middle of the field, controlling
the action and scoring two goals,” said Peluso. “Dormond and
Temple both played well offensively. Dormond came up with some
huge goals for us and Temple took a lot of shots, which is what we
needed him to do. Todd Riescher [Sr./Delray Beach, FL;
West Morris Mendham] was solid defensively all game and Chris
Mosher [Jr./Corning, NY; Corning Painted Post East] played
great ‘D’ down low.
“We’re
honored to host the MAC championship game on Saturday. We’re
excited about the opportunity to play a lot more lacrosse and
hopefully we can keep things rolling.”
The Warriors will
host Messiah College, who defeated Widener University, 15-14, in
the other MAC semifinal game. The championship game is scheduled
to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at Lycoming’s David
Person Field. The winner of the Middle Atlantic Conference
Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs.
