LYCOMING MEN’S
LACROSSE DEFEATS ALFRED;
WINS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE GAME
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– Mike Bonnes (Sr./Ridley Park; Ridley Senior) and Dan
Wilcox (Fr./Corning,
NY; Corning-Painted Post East) each scored four goals to pace
the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team in an 18-8 victory over
Alfred University in the Warriors’ home opener. The victory
improved Lycoming’s record to 5-1 overall and was their fourth
win in a row. The Saxon fell to 1-3 overall in 2001.
The Warriors
jumped all over Alfred early, scoring four goals in the opening
quarter. Freshman Sang Duong (Havertown; Haverford Township)
kept the offense going into the second quarter as Lycoming built
an 8-0 advantage. The Saxon broke through with a pair of goals
late in the half, but the Warriors scored with just eight seconds
to play before halftime to maintain their momentum.
Leading 9-2
coming out of the locker room, Lycoming quickly added to their
total with a pair of goals in the first minute of the second half.
Alfred attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring five
goals, but the Warriors offense kept the pressure on, finding the
back of the net five times as well.
In addition to
the goals scored by Bonnes and Wilcox; Duong, Buddy Temple
(Jr./Webster, NY; Webster Senior) and Ryan Bergstrom
(So./Hagerstown, MD; Smithsburg) each tallied three goals
apiece. Freshman Dave Dormond (Fr./Bryn Mawr; Haverford
Township) accounted for Lycoming’s 18th goal. For
the Saxon, Ben Leder, R.J. Dawson and Bryan Bacon each scored two
goals.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton)
played 55 minutes in net for the Warriors. He made 18 saves while
giving up six goals. Sean Powers (Fr./Drexel Hill; Monsignor
Bonner) finished in goal, allowing two goals. Kevin
Kazmierczak and P.J. Campbell split time in goal for Alfred,
combining for 17 saves and allowing 18 goals.
“I’m very
happy with the way we played today. The past few games we
struggled early, so it was important for us to get a good start
today,” said Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “I was very
happy to see us get out of the gates well and jump on Alfred
early. They have a tradition of having a strong program, so this
is an exciting win for us.
“Individually,
Sang Duong played an unbelievable game. He is just a freshman, but
he is creating a lot of offense for us. Mike Bonnes also did a
good job on the offensive end. Defensively, our entire starting
unit deserves to be recognized. They did a great job at pressuring
Alfred’s attack, and Jared had a great game in goal.”
Lycoming travels
to Villa Julie College on Saturday for another non-conference
game.
