WARRIOR MEN’S
LACROSSE DETHRONES ROYALS
SCRANTON, Pa. –
The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team overcame a 5-0 second
period deficit to defeat the University of Scranton, 16-9, in
Middle Atlantic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Sang Duong
(Fr./Havertown; Haverford Township)
scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the way for the
Warriors. Junior Buddy Temple (Webster, NY; Webster Senior)
added three goals and an assist in Lycoming’s third victory of
the season.
The Royals jumped
out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the opening period
while holding the Warriors scoreless. Scranton stretched the lead
to 5-0, early in the second on goals by Barton Farrell and Kyle
Eaton. Temple then got Lycoming on the board with a pair of goals,
as the Warriors rolled off six scores to take a 6-5 advantage into
halftime.
After the
intermission, Duong scored two goals, helping Lycoming extend its
lead to 10-7 after three periods of play. The Warriors then put
the game away with seven goals in the final quarter – two more
by Duong. Mike Bonnes (Sr./Ridley; Ridley Senior) added
three goals and Chris Rausch (Sr./Wilmington, DE; Salesianum)
chipped in two.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton)
made 11 saves in goal for Lycoming. Thomas Kenyon and Joe Garofalo
split time in net for the Royals, combining for 13 saves.
“We got in hole
early, down 5-0 after the first quarter-and-a-half. Things looked
bad,” said Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “Buddy Temple
scored a couple of goals in the second to get us going and we were
able to score pretty consistently the rest of the game. I’m very
pleased with how our offense played the last three quarters, but
we need to be able to play that way right out of the gate.
“We had
outstanding performances from Temple, Mark Barnes and Sang Duong.
Temple just played an all-around great game. Barnes was terrific
on face-offs and in the midfield all game. He truly played like an
All-American. Duong really stepped in up today. As a freshman, he
went up against Scranton’s top defender and really performed
well with six goals.”
The win marks the
Warriors’ second in a row and improves their record to 3-1
overall and 1-0 in the MAC. Scranton falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1
in the conference. Lycoming will play again on Sunday, March 25,
when they travel to DeSales University.
