WARRIOR MEN’S
LACROSSE SURVIVES DREW;
WINS REGULAR SEASON CONFERENCE TITLE
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team battled back from
6-2 and 13-10 deficits to defeat Drew University, 15-14, in Middle
Atlantic Conference action at David Person Field, Saturday
afternoon. The win secured the regular season championship for the
Warriors and gives them home-field advantage throughout the MAC
tournament.
Early in the game
it appeared as if the Rangers would control the contest, scoring
the first three goals of the game. Lycoming answered with their
first goal as time expired at the end of the first quarter and a
second goal the beginning of the second quarter. Drew, however,
took charge again, posting three unanswered goals to a take a
four-goal lead – their largest advantage in the game. The
Warriors again responded, this time with three goals of their own
to pull within one at the half.
The Rangers
extended their lead back to three by scoring the first two goals
of the second half, only to have Lycoming come back once again
with four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Drew went on a run of their
own, scoring three goals to move ahead 13-10 with just over 11
minutes to play. Despite all the momentum in the Rangers’ favor,
the Warriors did not give up and recorded three goals in three
minutes to tie the score for the fourth time in the game.
Drew moved ahead
with their 14th goal of the game with 5:44 remaining on
the clock. Lycoming, however, responded yet again, scoring the
tying goal just seven seconds after the Rangers went ahead and the
go-ahead goal just 12 seconds later.
Senior Mike
Bonnes (Ridley Park; Ridley Senior) led the Warrior offense
with four goals and a pair of assists. Dan Wilcox (Fr./Corning,
NY; Corning-Painted Post East) and Chris Rausch
(Sr./Wilmington, DE; Salesianum) added three goals each to the
effort. Mark Barnes (Sr./Elmira, NY; Corning-Painted Post East)
played a strong game in the middle of the field for Lycoming,
controlling the action and recording a goal and an assist.
For Drew, Nate
Matsui scored four goals and tallied two assists. Mike Talarico
added four goals and an assist.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton)
played the entire game in goal for the Warriors, making 17 saves.
Rob Siris was in goal for the Rangers, making 22 saves.
“What a fight
today. Drew is a great team, we were just able to step up and meet
the challenge,” said Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “Our
players showed a lot of heart fighting back. We were down more
than once but each time we fought back and fortunately ended up on
top at the end. We are very excited about being the MAC regular
season champions.
“Dan Wilcox
stepped up today and scored some huge goals for us. Mark Barnes
controlled the middle of the field and played a great game. And
Mike Bonnes really took over the game on offense when we needed
him to.”
Lycoming will
host the fourth-place team in the conference for a first-round
playoff game on May 2 at a time to be determined. The Warriors
finish the regular season with a mark of 11-3 overall and 7-1
within the MAC. The 11 wins set a new record for the fifth-year
program.
