LACROSSE DOMINATES SUSQUEHANNA;
CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH
SELINSGROVE, Pa.
– Freshman Sang Duong (Havertown; Haverford Township)
scored six goals and recorded six assists, leading the Lycoming
College men’s lacrosse team to a 25-2 victory over Susquehanna
University, Wednesday afternoon. The win secures a spot in the
Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs for the Warriors, who are now
10-3 overall and 6-1 within the MAC. The Crusaders fall to 2-5 and
1-3.
Lycoming jumped
all over Susquehanna early, scoring 10 goals in the first quarter
and seven in the second while holding the Crusaders scoreless. The
onslaught continued in the second half with the Warriors
outscoring Susquehanna 8-2 in the final 30 minutes.
In addition to
the offense produced by Duong, Mike Bonnes (Sr./Ridley Park;
Ridley Senior) and Dave Dormond (Fr./Byrn Mawr; Haverford
Township) each scored four goals and tallied four and three
assists, respectively. Todd Brysiak (Sr./Aston; Ridley Senior)
and Ryan Bergstrom (So./Hagerstown, MD; Smithsburg) chipped
in three goals apiece.
Jared
Jankowski (Sr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton)
played the first half in goal for Lycoming, making six saves
without allowing a goal. Christian Willaum (Fr./New Milford,
CT; New Milford) saw 17 minutes in the net, allowing one goal
while making three saves. Sean Powers (Fr./Drexel Hill;
Monsignor Bonner) and Jon Bennitt (Jr./Painted Post, NY;
Corning-Painted Post West) rounded out the time in goal.
Powers made two saves and allowed zero goals. Bennitt made one
saves and allowed a goal.
“We’re
excited that we wrapped up a playoff berth with the win today,”
said Lycoming head coach Gene Peluso. “Sang played a terrific
game, coming just one point short of Shawn Rosa’s record for a
single contest.
“Now we are
looking forward to our match-up with Drew on Saturday. We’re
excited that Messiah knocked off Widener this afternoon, giving us
an opportunity to claim the top seed for the tournament on
Saturday.”
Lycoming will
host Drew University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at David Person Field.
With Messiah’s 9-6 win over Widener, the Warriors can claim the
top seed and home field advantage throughout the MAC playoff with
a win.
