Playoff Picture Still Wide Open After
Warriors' Victory
Box
Score
WILKES-BARRE
,
Pa.
--- Junior
attacker Tom Nairn
(Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored with 1:36 left in the second
overtime period to put an end to the Warriors two-game losing skid
and defeat King’s College 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon.
The victory improves Lycoming’s record to 5-7 overall,
5-4 in MAC play, and keeps several options open for playoff
possibilities.
After
tonight’s action, Lycoming is tied with
Elizabethtown
College
and
Susquehanna
University
for the final two playoff spots.
But action this weekend including a Warrior victory over
FDU-Florham could open the door for Lycoming to slide to #3 and
host a first round game on Monday.
The
Warriors played their way into this position with a strong charge
in the fourth quarter. Opening
the frame down 7-6, Lycoming fell two back when King’s Ed
Skawinski scored with 11:40 to play in regulation.
Sophomore
Jim Cusick (
Aston
,
Pa.
/
Sun Valley
) got the Warriors comeback rolling with two straight goals to
tie the game 8-8 with 8:58 on the clock.
Fellow sophomore Justin
Dixon (
Baltimore
,
Md.
/
North
County
) put the Warriors ahead with his second goal of the contest
with 7:01 showing on the scoreboard.
Lycoming
seemed on its way to victory, holding the Monarch’s at bay until
the final seconds. John Matusiewicz tied the score 9-9 with 15 seconds left to send the
game into overtime.
Neither
squad could break through in the first extra period.
In fact, neither team worked in a shot in that frame.
But Nairn broke through almost 67 minutes from the first
whistle, finishing a feed from
Dixon
beyond the Monarch keeper.
Nairn
led the Warrior attack with three goals while Cusick and
Dixon
both came away with two scores and an assist.
Freshman Ryan Godec (
Malvern
,
Pa.
/
Great
Valley
) added two goals, and sophomore Matt
Lando (
Corning
, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) chipped in one score and two
helpers. Freshman Shea
Conway (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) recorded an assist as well.
Lycoming
is next in action on Saturday, April 29, as the Warriors welcome
FDU-Florham to
Williamsport
for the final regular season contest of the season.
A victory would assure the Warriors a spot in the
postseason. Game time
is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
