Warriors Sweep Men's Lax Awards
Cusick, Lyons Nail Down Weekly Honors
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Lycoming men’s lacrosse opened the 2006
Middle Atlantic
Conference
portion of its schedule with the squads first victory of the
season, and the rest of the conference took notice of some of
the outstanding play from that effort. The Warriors pulled off
the rare sweep of conference weekly awards with sophomore Jim
Cusick (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) earning the Player of the
Week nod and fellow second year Warrior Matt Lyons (Radnor,
Pa./Conestoga) coming away with the Defensive
Player/Goalkeeper of the Week honor.
Cusick
spearheaded a potent Warrior attack that outpaced DeSales
University on Saturday 12-5. Held scoreless through the first
period that found Lycoming up only one goal after 15
minutes of play, Cusick took control of the second frame with
the only three goals period to push the Warriors out to a 6-2
halftime edge. He added one more in the third period and two
more in the fourth quarter to secure the Warriors’ first victory
of the season. Cusick also had two assists in the effort.
Lyons
was just as effective on the opposite third of the field.
Lycoming’s starting netminder came away with 11 saves for the
game, stifling the Bulldog attackers five times in the second
period to help the Warriors to a four-goal advantage at the
intermission. He added four more saves in the third and a pair
in the fourth quarter as DeSales tried to claw its way back into
the game.
For the
season, Cusick is tied for the team lead in points with 11 on a
squad-best eight goals to go along with three assists. Lyons is
1-2 on the season, having started all three games for the
Warriors thus far. He has made 37 saves and allowed 25 goals,
good enough for a conference-best .597 save percentage. |
