Cannon Scores Three
Times and Throws in an Assist
BETHLEHEM,
Pa.—Lycoming’s men’s lacrosse team (2-5, 2-1) defeated Moravian
(0-8, 0-3) on Saturday in Middle Atlantic Conference action by a
score of 8-5. The Warriors scored three late goals and held off
the Greyhounds for the win.
Moravian got
out to a 2-0 lead near the middle of the first quarter on a pair
of goals in less than 30 seconds. But junior attack Dan Cannon
(Orangeville, ONT) answered with a first quarter goal to cut
the lead in half. Lycoming then scored two more unanswered goals
by seniors Andrew Reckley (Aston, PA) and Matt Lando
(Corning, NY) to go into the half with a 3-2 lead.

The Warriors
extended the difference to 5-2 on another Cannon goal and a
Nate Walter (Harrisburg, PA) score in the opening three
minutes of the third quarter. However, Moravian netted two third
quarter goals to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 15 minutes to play.
The scoring
seemed to dry up for most of the final frame, until Lycoming’s
Cannon found the net for the third time at 4:28. Walter, who
assisted Cannon’s final goal, scored just nine seconds later to
essentially put the game away. Walter then dished his third assist
of the day to junior midfielder Jim Cusick (Aston, PA) with
3:23 remaining.
Moravian’s
Jason Tosches scored a man-up goal in the last minute on an
assist from
T.J. Hirsch.
Hirsch, who leads the nation in ground balls per game, had three
ground balls in the contest and became the first player in
Greyhound history with 300 career ground balls. Hirsch also
entered the match nationally ranked in face-off percentage, but
was just 5 of 13 against the Warriors. The Warriors had a 34-23
advantage in shots, a 40-29 edge in ground balls and won 10 of 17
face-offs.
Cannon led the
Warriors with three goals, while Walter had a team-high three
assists. Freshman defender Mike Johnson (Cranberry Township,
PA) led Lycoming with six ground balls and sophomore goalie
Kyle Gilfoy (Media, PA) had eight saves and four ground balls.
Lycoming
returns to action on Wednesday, April 4th at Shangraw
Athletic Complex, taking on King’s at 4:00 p.m. |
