Can’t Finish Off Scranton
Lycoming Falls
Despite Halftime Lead
SCRANTON,
Pa.—Lycoming’s men’s lacrosse team (2-7, 2-3) lost to Scranton
on Wednesday by a score of 11-9. Ahead 3-0 early in the first
period and 7-5 at intermission, the Warriors managed just two
goals in the second-half and were held scoreless in the fourth
quarter.
Freshman
attackers Nate Walter (Harrisburg,
Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Brad Schaeffer (Smithsburg,
Md./Smithsburg) and junior midfielder Jim Cusick (Aston,
Pa./Sun Valley) led the Warriors with two goals apiece.
Schaeffer scored two goals during a five-minute span of the
first period and Walter added another as Lycoming jumped out to
a 3-0 lead before Scranton’s Ed Boate answered with a
man-up goal.

Scranton’s
Joe Flynn won 18 of 24 face-offs and cut Lycoming’s lead
to 3-2 just 14 seconds after Boate’s scored. After the Royals
knotted the tally at 3-3 early in the second period, the
momentum swung in Lycoming’s favor. Walter, Cusick and junior
attacker Dan Cannon (Orangeville, Ontario/Orangeville)
scored three straight goals over a six-minute span to capture a 6-3 lead. Scranton sandwiched goals around a Cusick
score to cut the difference to 7-5 at the half.
Scranton
then
took its first lead, 9-8, in the third period, but an
unassisted goal by junior Dan Conkright (Spring
City, Pa./Owen
J. Roberts) knotted the game at nine with less than a minute
remaining in the quarter.
Scranton’s
Phil Lindner scored the game-winning goal at 8:06 in the
fourth, while the Royals added an insurance goal by Boate with
2:20 remaining to seal the victory.
Sophomore
goalie Kyle Gilfoy (Media,
Pa./Penncrest) finished the
contest with a game-high 19 saves for Lycoming.
