LYCOMING MEN’S LACROSSE FALLS JUST SHY OF CONFERENCE TITLE

CHESTER, PA – The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team traveled to Widener University, Saturday afternoon, to compete for the Middle Atlantic Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Warriors, however, came up one goal short in a comeback attempt falling 9-8 to the Pioneers. Lycoming finishes the 2002 campaign with an overall mark of 12-5 and claims their fourth consecutive MAC runner-up honor. Widener improves to 12-3 overall and wins their sixth conference title in the past seven years.

The Warriors scored the first two goals of the game, but the Pioneers quickly came back to take a 5-3 lead by the end of the first period. They would never trail again. Lycoming attempted a fourth-quarter comeback, scoring three goals to pull within one with just over three minutes to play. The Warriors, however, could not find the back of the net one more time to knot the score.

Sang Duong (So./Havertown, PA; Haverford) led all players with three goals and three assists in the contest. Dave Kirschner (Fr./Newtown Square, PA; Marple Newtown) added two goals and two assists. Dan Wilcox (So./Corning, NY; Corning-Painted Post East) also tallied a pair of goals. Buddy Temple (Sr./Webster, NY; Webster) recorded one goal and one assist in his final collegiate game.

Sean Powers (So./Drexel Hill, PA; Monsignor) went the distance in goal for Lycoming, making 17 saves.
