LYCOMING MEN’S
LACROSSE NIPS ROYALS
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team hosted the
University of Scranton, Wednesday afternoon, in a Middle Atlantic
Freedom Conference contest. Both teams struggled offensively in
muddy conditions, but the Warriors overcame a 3-2 deficit with
three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to steal a 5-4
victory. Lycoming improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 within the
conference. The Royals fall to 2-3 and 1-1.
The
Warriors got on the board first on a goal by Dan Wilcox
(So./Corning, NY; Corning-Painted Post East) just more than
four minutes into the game. Scranton’s William Ayers (Jr,/Croton
On Hudson, NY; John F. Kennedy) tied the game with a goal of
his own less than a minute later. Lycoming added another score in
the opening period when Eric Holzhauer (Sr./Willow Grove, PA;
Abington) found the back of the net to put Lycoming ahead,
2-1.
The
Royals recorded the second period’s lone goal on a score by Timothy
Miller (Jr./Glen Cove, NY; Chaminade) to knot the score at 2-2
heading into the half. Dennis Mahon (So./Medford, NJ; St.
Joseph’s Prep) then gave Scranton their only lead of the
game with a third period goal while the Royal defense held the
Warriors scoreless for the second straight quarter.
Lycoming’s
offense finally came to life in the final period. Ryan
Bergstrom (Jr./Hagerstown, MD; Smithsburg) tied the game at
3-3 with 8:06 remaining. Buddy Temple (Sr./Webster, NY;
Webster) then tallied the go-ahead goal with 2:30 to play,
before Sang Duong (So./Havertown, PA; Haverford) scored the
eventual game winner with just 1:34 showing on the clock. James
Goggi (Sr./Chittenango, NY; Christian Brothers Acad.) added a
late goal to pull Scranton within one but with just 28 seconds
remaining it was too little, too late.
Sean
Powers (So./Drexel Hill, PA; Monsignor)
made nine saves in goal for the Warriors, picking up his second
win of the season. Thomas Kenyon (So./Chittenango, NY;
Chittenango) was in goal for the Royals. He made nine saves.
Lycoming
will travel to Alfred University this weekend for a four-team
tournament. The Warriors will face Clarkson in the opening round
on Saturday afternoon.
