WARRIORS’
UPSET BID FALLS SHORT
WILKES-BARRE, Pa.
– The Lycoming College men’s basketball team traveled to
Wilkes University Wednesday evening with thoughts of upsetting the
number three team in the country. The thoughts nearly became
reality as the Warriors led 46-44 at the half. The lead would not
stand up, however, as the Colonels came back to win 89-81.
Lycoming got off
to a great start, jumping out to an 11 point lead seven minutes
into the ballgame. Wilkes was forced to spend the remainder of the
half chipping away at the deficit, closing to within two at the
intermission. In the second half, it was the Colonels’ turn to
take charge, going on an 18-2 run that ended with just over eight
minutes to play and Wilkes up 20 points. The Warriors did not die,
however, cutting the lead to eight by game’s end.
“Other than a
five minute spell in the second half, that was the best basketball
we’ve played this year,” said Lycoming head coach Terry
Conrad. “I was very happy with how we rebounded, that was the
most intensity we’ve shown on both ends of the court all
season.”
David Ganisin
(Sr./Endicott, NY; Union Endicott)
led all scorers with 26 points in the game. He also pulled down
eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Brian Lindsay
(Sr./Gettysburg; Gettysburg) added 14 markers on the strength
of three three-pointers. Chris Napier (Jr./Port Jervis, NY;
Minisink Valley) led the Warriors with 10 boards, while
scoring 13 points. Thomas Wesner (So./Dillburg; Northern
Senior) tallied 11 points and four assists.
“It will be
nice to play a game in Lamade Gymnasium after playing
nine-of-twelve on the road,” said Conrad. “Hopefully, the
positive things we accomplished tonight will carry over.”
Lycoming
falls to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the MAC Freedom Conference with
the loss. Wilkes improves to 11-0 and 4-0. The Warriors will
return home to host the Delaware Valley Aggies this Sunday at 3
p.m.
