Warriors Sweep Major Conference Awards
Coach Friday, Pribble, Sye Named League Bests
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Lycoming men’s basketball was rewarded for
its outstanding season on Tuesday afternoon by the Middle
Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), the
governing structure for the Freedom and Commonwealth
Conferences. The Warrior program picked up all three major
Freedom Conference honors as head coach Don Friday was
named Coach of the Year while senior Jonathan Pribble (Woolrich,
Pa./Central Mountain) was tabbed the Player of the Year and
first-year big man Greg Sye (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly)
earned the Freshman of the Year honor. Not to be left out of
the celebration, senior Brad Musser (Mifflinburg,
Pa./Mifflinburg) was recognized for his stellar play with a
All-Freedom Conference Second Team selection.
Coach Friday,
in just his third season at Lycoming, has brought the Warriors
to their second postseason appearance during his tenure. In
2003-04, he led the blue and gold to a Freedom Conference title
and berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. This
year, with talents like Pribble, Sye, and Musser on the squad,
he hopes to repeat the same success and move beyond the national
tourney’s first round.
Friday set a
personal record in 2005-06 as well, tying former Lycoming head
coach Joe Bressi for the quickest to 50 victories with the
Warriors. Both men reached the mark in their 75th
respective games patrolling the Lamade Gymnasium sidelines.
Coach Friday currently enjoys a 53-26 career record.
Pribble, after
earning the Freshman of the Year award in 2002-03, has picked up
three first teams honors, including this season. On Saturday,
he closed the regular season atop the conference in scoring for
the second time in his career, finishing with a 20.6 points per
game average. He also led the league in free throw percentage
(.802) and three-pointers made (74 for 2.96 per game). He has
recorded four of the top 10 scoring games in the conference this
season, including the two highest totals of 40 and 36 points on
separate occasions.
Aside from
holding down the second position on the Lycoming men’s
basketball’s all-time career points scored list, Pribble sits
only 36 tallies away from reaching the coveted 2,000-point
plateau. Currently at 1,964 points, he would be only the second
Warrior to reach such a lofty mark, trailing only 1974 grad
Richard Henninger’s 2,184-point total.
Sye had an
outstanding first campaign in Warrior blue and gold. He emerged
as one of the conference’s top post options covering the last
month-plus of the regular season, increasing his scoring and
rebound averages into the upper echelon of the conference
fixtures. His 12.3 points per game rate 11th in the league, and
he chimes in tied for fourth place in rebounding at 6.5 boards
per contest. His six double-doubles tied with Evan Walters from
King’s College and Tom Bicknell from the University of Scranton
for tops in the conference.
Musser set a
pair of records on the way to a banner year for the Warrior
point guard and floor general. Aside from leading the
conference in assists at 6.12 per game, his 14-assist effort
against Elmira College not only paced the conference, but set a
new Warrior all-time single-game mark. At the College of
Wooster tournament over the holiday break, Musser added a second
feather to his cap in becoming the Lycoming men’s basketball
all-time career assists leader. He currently boasts 428 total
assists.
