Neck and Neck Battle
Favors Lycoming
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa.—The men’s basketball team (2-1) defeated Elizabethtown (1-2)
Tuesday night, 77-74. The Blue Jays were on top for much of the
game, but Lycoming rallied when it mattered and took the
victory. Kevin Morris (Camp Hill, PA) and Jemayne
Nowlin (Gaithersburg, MD) each sank four three-pointers and
ended the night with 18 and 17 points respectively.
Elizabethtown
jumped to an early 17-6 lead and went into halftime up 47-36,
but strong play by big men Ricky Varnell (Patterson, NY)
and captain Matt McGair (Mt. Laurel, NJ) closed the gap
in the second half. Varnell finished the night with a team-high
eight rebounds, while McGair recorded seven ‘bounds and blocked
two shots. Junior David Wilson (Pottsville, PA) had
another stellar night, sinking 5 of 6 free throws on his way to
14 points.
Sophomore
Greg Sye (Chantilly, VA) had seven points and five assists,
but left the game with eleven minutes to play. Shortly
thereafter, E-town’s Kris Kieres sank an uncharacteristic
three to put the Blue Jays up by seven. The future looked bleak
for Lycoming, but with three-pointers and strong defense they
cut the lead to one.
With 30
seconds left in the game, the Warriors went up 75-74 and
Jemayne Nowlin produced a steal. Head Coach Don Friday
called time out and directed his team to whittle down the
remaining time. Lycoming sank two free throws in the process and
the game ended 77-74.
The Warriors
next contest is on Wednesday, November 29 at Wilkes at 8:00 p.m.
The women’s team will face the Lady Colonels immediately
preceding the game.
