Randolph-Macon Too Much For Warriors
Greg Sye Named to
All-Tournament Team
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa.—Nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon defeated Lycoming 81-66 in
the championship game of the Warrior Tip-Off Tournament on
Saturday at Lamade Gymnasium. John Jay College beat Penn
State-Berks 71-53 in the consolation game.
Lycoming
forward Greg Sye (Chantilly, VA) was named to the
All-Tournament team* after scoring 45 points and pulling down 19
rebounds on the weekend. Sye scored 25, including 7 of 8 from
the line, against Randolph-Macon, adding eight rebounds and two
steals.
But the
story of the day was three-pointers. Both teams combined for 17
threes on 41 attempts. Randolph-Macon’s Stephen Sutherland
sunk his first three shots from beyond the arc, helping the
Yellow Jackets go into the half with a 43-29 lead. Junior
David Wilson (Pottsville, PA) led the Warriors with four
threes. But it was Kevin Morris’ (Camp Hill, PA)
back-to-back three-pointers in the
second half that briefly gave
Lycoming the lead 59-55.
The Warriors
battled for that lead, but the Yellow Jackets deep rotation of
big men eventually wore down Lycoming. While many teams schedule
cupcakes for their home tournament, Head Coach Don Friday
welcomed a nationally ranked opponent. Randolph-Macon may have
taken the Tip-Off Championship, but the stiff competition will
surely make Friday’s troops stronger.
The Warriors
host Elizabethtown on November 21 at 8:00 p.m. Lycoming’s
women’s team faces Misericordia before the men’s game. The Lady
Warriors tip off at 6:00 p.m. at Lamade Gymnasium.
*The Warrior Tip-Off
All-Tournament Team also included Randolph-Macon's David Clarkson
and Justin Short, John Jay's Alex Valerio and
PSU-Berks' Joe Askew. Clarkson was the tournament's Most
Valuable Player.
