Lycoming
Topples Playoff-Bound DeSales
Morris and Nowlin
Combine For 44 Points
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa.—The Lycoming Warriors (12-11, 5-7) handled a tough DeSales
team (16-7, 7-5) on Saturday 74-65.
The Warriors hang on to an
outside chance at the Freedom Conference playoffs, while the
Bulldogs took a hit to their shaky third-ranking.
Seventeen
days ago, DeSales edged Lycoming 64-63, but today on their home court,
the Warriors exacted revenge with a comeback victory. Led by the
long-range mastery of Kevin Morris (Camp Hill, PA) and a
three-point explosion from Jemayne Nowlin (Gaithersburg, MD),
Lycoming roared back from a 39-30 halftime deficit to grab the
win.
Morris
hit four threes on the day, finishing with 24 points. Nowlin
kept pace with four from beyond the arc and 20 points for the
game. Junior captain David Wilson (Pottsville, PA)
contributed 14 points, while fellow guard Anthony Watson
(Philadelphia, PA) dished nine assists.
Sophomore
Greg Sye (Chantilly, VA) did not dress for the game because
of an injury, so captain Matt McGair (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and
Rickey Varnell (Patterson, NY) picked up the slack
inside. McGair and Billy Goodell (Williamsport, PA)
grabbed six rebounds apiece, while Varnell snagged five. Watson
did his part, securing a season-high six boards from the
frontcourt to go with his three steals.
DeSales
featured big men Phil Stricker and Ed Lapinski,
who scored 19 and 18 respectively. Even without a healthy Sye,
the Warrior interior held the Bulldog backcourt enough to come out on top.
Lycoming
took a 46-45 lead with 12:11 left to play in the game, and after
three ties, went up for good with just over five minutes left. Once again,
clutch foul shooting by Morris and
Nowlin in the final minutes assured Lycoming a victory.
The Warriors
suit up for their last 2007 home game on Tuesday, February 13 at
8:00 p.m. versus Scranton. The game will be televised locally
and a women’s game will precede the
action.
