Lycoming
Defeats Penn College
Warriors Win
Consolation Game of Albright Tourney
READING,
Pa.—On Friday, the opening night of the Albright Tournament,
Lycoming’s men’s basketball team (7-5) lost a close one to NJCU,
59-56. The loss set up a Saturday afternoon match-up with Penn
College. In the tournament’s consolation game, the Warriors
defeated their crosstown rival for the second time this season,
64-49.
Greg Sye
(Chantilly, VA)
led Lycoming with 16 points versus New Jersey City University.
Jemayne Nowlin (Gaithersburg, MD) put up 13 points and
co-captain Matt McGair (Mt. Laurel, NJ) hauled in eight
rebounds. But it wasn’t enough to stifle NJCU, who shot a
blazing 63% in the first half. The Warriors whittled down a
14-point halftime deficit, but couldn’t quite eclipse it.
On
Saturday, Lycoming looked to different leaders. Kevin Morris
(Camp Hill, PA) scored 17 points, while Rickey Varnell
(Patterson, NY) posted his first collegiate double-double
with 14 points and 10 boards. From the tip-off, the Warriors
sprinted to a 12-0 lead, thanks to four steals by Sye. At
the half, Lycoming held a 35-23 advantage.
The second
period held much of the same as the Warriors cruised to victory
on the strength of eight points by Morris and eight
points by Varnell. Penn College’s Roberto Valentin,
who scored nine first-half points, was held scoreless in the
second period.
Lycoming’s
next contest is at Scranton on Wednesday, January 10 at 8:00
p.m. The Warriors are home on Monday, January 15, when they host
Carnegie Mellon at 7:00 p.m.
