JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Lycoming College
men’s basketball team traveled to Jersey City, N.J., Saturday
evening, to take on New Jersey City University in the second round
of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Warriors battled
to the end but came up just short of their bid to advance to the
"Sweet Sixteen" falling 74-67. Lycoming finishes the
season at 21-8. The Gothic Knights improved to 22-6 and will play
Amherst College in the round of 16.
In a game that featured contrasting styles
of play, control of the contest went back-and-forth. All told
there were 14 lead changes and eight ties during the game.
The Warriors started the game in their
deliberate half-court style and opened up a 9-3 advantage after
five minutes of play. New Jersey City, however, used a full-court
press to up the tempo and ran off eight straight points to take an
11-9 lead just two minutes later. The Knights stretched their lead
to as many as six midway through the period, but Lycoming was able
to close the gap to just one by halftime.
In the second half, the Warriors were again
able to establish their style of play in the early going. Through
the first seven minutes of the period, Lycoming held New Jersey
City to just four points while scoring 11 of their own to take a
44-38 lead with 13:30 to play. The Knights, however, again
responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead.
Leading 51-50 with eight minutes to play,
New Jersey City went on an 11-2 run that gave them a 10-point
advantage with just five minutes to play. This time it was the
Warriors who answered with an 11-2 run of their own that pulled
them within 63-64 with just over two minutes remaining. The
Knights extended their lead to four entering the final minute, but
Lycoming again pulled with one with 50 second showing on the
clock. The comeback was not meant to be, however, as New Jersey
City went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds
to seal the victory.
Jonathan Pribble (So./Woolrich, Pa.; Central
Mountain) led all scorers with 24
points and nine rebounds. Matt Stackhouse (Sr./Hughesville,
Pa.; Hughesville) added 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
L.J. Huggler (Sr./St. Marys, Pa.; St. Marys) chipped in 10
points and Shaun Morris (Jr./Camp Hill, Pa.; Trinity) led
the squad with seven assists.
Kareem Collins came off the bench to lead
the Knights in scoring with 15 points. Harold Williams added 14
points, and Mark Washington and Samar Battle each scored 13 to
give New Jersey City four players in double figures. Washington
also led the team in rebounds and assists with eight and four,
respectively.
