JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Lycoming College men’s basketball team traveled to Jersey City, N.J., Saturday evening, to take on New Jersey City University in the second round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Warriors battled to the end but came up just short of their bid to advance to the "Sweet Sixteen" falling 74-67. Lycoming finishes the season at 21-8. The Gothic Knights improved to 22-6 and will play Amherst College in the round of 16.

In a game that featured contrasting styles of play, control of the contest went back-and-forth. All told there were 14 lead changes and eight ties during the game.

The Warriors started the game in their deliberate half-court style and opened up a 9-3 advantage after five minutes of play. New Jersey City, however, used a full-court press to up the tempo and ran off eight straight points to take an 11-9 lead just two minutes later. The Knights stretched their lead to as many as six midway through the period, but Lycoming was able to close the gap to just one by halftime.

In the second half, the Warriors were again able to establish their style of play in the early going. Through the first seven minutes of the period, Lycoming held New Jersey City to just four points while scoring 11 of their own to take a 44-38 lead with 13:30 to play. The Knights, however, again responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead.

Leading 51-50 with eight minutes to play, New Jersey City went on an 11-2 run that gave them a 10-point advantage with just five minutes to play. This time it was the Warriors who answered with an 11-2 run of their own that pulled them within 63-64 with just over two minutes remaining. The Knights extended their lead to four entering the final minute, but Lycoming again pulled with one with 50 second showing on the clock. The comeback was not meant to be, however, as New Jersey City went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Jonathan Pribble (So./Woolrich, Pa.; Central Mountain) led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds. Matt Stackhouse (Sr./Hughesville, Pa.; Hughesville) added 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. L.J. Huggler (Sr./St. Marys, Pa.; St. Marys) chipped in 10 points and Shaun Morris (Jr./Camp Hill, Pa.; Trinity) led the squad with seven assists.

Kareem Collins came off the bench to lead the Knights in scoring with 15 points. Harold Williams added 14 points, and Mark Washington and Samar Battle each scored 13 to give New Jersey City four players in double figures.
