MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS NEW YEAR WITH WIN

WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s basketball team kicked off
2004 by hosting College Misericordia, Saturday afternoon, for a
non-conference contest. The Warriors overcame a three-point
halftime deficit to defeat the Cougars 74-62. Lycoming improves to
6-2 on the season, while Misericordia falls to 3-3.
The Cougars got
off to a fast start opening up an eight-point advantage five
minutes into the game. The Warriors, however, chipped away and
took their first lead of the game with 4:27 to play in the opening
period. Misericordia recovered to take a 35-32 lead into the
locker room.
In the second
half the lead changed hands seven times before Lycoming took
control of the game with seven minutes to play. With the score
tied at 54-54 with 7:12 to play the Warriors tallied a free throw
and two lay-ups to open up a five-point lead. Lycoming’s defense
did the rest, holding the Cougars to just eight points over the
final five minutes as the home team extended their lead to 12 by
game’s end.
Senior Matt
Stackhouse (Hughesville, Pa.; Hughesville) led the Warriors
with 25 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Jonathan Pribble
(So./Woolrich, Pa.; Central Mountain) added 19 markers and L.J.
Huggler (Sr./St. Mary’s, Pa.; St. Mary’s) chipped in 10
points and seven rebounds. Shaun Morris (Jr./Camp Hill, Pa.;
Trinity) led the squad with six assists.
For
Misericordia, Ed Corliss (Sr./Springfield, Pa.; Springfield)
scored a team-high 16 points. Shawn Hayes (Sr./Scranton, Pa.;
Bishop Hannan) added 12 points and Kyle Watkins
(Sr./Towanda, Pa.; Towanda) chipped in 11.
Lycoming
will hit the road for their next game, traveling to Shenandoah
University for a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, January 6.
