MEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS KING’S;
CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College men’s basketball team hosted
King’s College, Saturday evening, for a Freedom Conference
contest. The Warriors made a 14-point halftime lead stand up,
defeating the Monarchs 83-77. Lycoming improves to 15-8 overall
and 10-2 in the conference. The win moves the Warriors into first
place in the Freedom Conference and secures a berth in the
conference tournament. King’s falls to 14-9 and 7-5.
The
Monarchs had the hot hand early, shooting better than 60% through
the first ten minutes as they opened up a nine-point lead.
Lycoming, however, mounted a comeback just as King’s began to go
cold resulting a 14-point halftime lead for the home team. Tommy
Wesner (Sr./Dillsburg, PA; Northern) led the Warrior attack
with 25 first-half points, including four three-pointers.
In
the second half, Lycoming maintained their double-digit advantage
for the first nine minutes before the Monarchs mounted a comeback
of their own. Trailing 66-52 with 10:53 to play, King’s went on
a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to pull within two. The
Warriors stretched their lead back to eight with 2:51 to play, but
the Monarchs would not go away. A three-pointer by Dannie Evans
with 13 seconds to play again pulled King’s within two at 79-77.
Lycoming, however, secured the victory from the free-throw line as
Wesner and Matt Stackhouse (Jr./Hughesville, PA; Hughesville)
went 4-for-4 in the final ten seconds.
Wesner
was the game’s high scorer with 29 points. L.J. Huggler
(Jr./St. Marys, PA; St. Marys) added 18 points, including
12-of-15 free throws. Jonathan Pribble (Fr./Woolrich, PA;
Central Mountain) recorded a double-double with 13 points and
a game-high 15 rebounds.
The
Monarchs were led by Marty O’Hora with 16 points and seven
boards. Evans and Kasim Holloman each added 15 markers.
The
Warriors will travel to the University of Scranton, on Tuesday,
February 18, for their next contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 8
p.m.
