THREE WARRIORS
NAMED TO FOOTBALL GAZETTE
ALL-SOUTH REGION TEAMS
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– Lycoming College claimed three members on the 2001 Football
Gazette All-South Region teams released Friday afternoon. Senior Tom
Zulkowski (Frackville, PA; Cardinal Brennan) was named the
first-team tight end and will be placed on the national ballot for
All-American honors from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Tim
Deasey (Sr./Norwood, PA; Interboro) and Josh Albeck
(Sr./Allentown, PA; Central Catholic) were both named to the
second team; Deasey at running back and Albeck as an offensive
lineman.
Zulkowski was
a key member of the Warriors’ three-pronged receiving corps that
combined for 105 catches, 1,617 yards, and 14 touchdowns this
season. Individually, Zulkowski led the team with 40 receptions
and accounted for 500 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught a
pair of two-point conversions. In addition to his receiving
duties, Zulkowski was an important blocker in Lycoming’s running
game and a member of their kick-blocking special teams unit. In
the Warriors’ season finale at Juniata, Zulkowski blocked an
extra-point attempt by hurdling both the defensive and offensive
lines. Zulkowski has also been named a Middle Atlantic Conference
1st-team all-star.
Deasey became
the Warriors’ most prolific running back his senior season,
setting numerous school records. In nine games, he carried the
ball 234 times for 1,247 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught
10 passes for 96 yards and one score. In the first game of the
2001 campaign, Deasey broke the school record for rushing yards in
a game gaining 253 yards versus Lebanon Valley. He went on to
break a total of 13 school records, including single-season
rushing yards and career rushing yards. Deasey has also been named
the MAC Offensive Player of the Year and a 1st-team
conference all-star.
Albeck was the
lone senior on an offensive line that featured three sophomores as
starters for Lycoming this season. That offensive line cleared the
way for the Warrior running attack to gain 1,606 yards on 405
carries – an average of 4.0 yards per rush. They also allowed
Lycoming running back to score 21 touchdowns. As a team the
Warriors ranked second in the conference in both total offense and
scoring offense, while ranking third in rushing offense and fewest
sacks allowed. Albeck has also been named an MAC 1st-team
all-star.
The
2001 Lycoming football team finished with a record of 8-1 to mark
their 27th consecutive winning season. Their only loss
was to MAC Champion Widener University, who will play in the
quarterfinals of the NCAA playoffs this weekend.
