Team Drops Third Straight
Moravian Keeps on
Running… and Running
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming (3-4) lost its third game in a row
Saturday, falling to Moravian (4-4) by a score of 22-3. Red zone
turnovers spelled the difference as the Warriors failed to score
a touchdown for the second straight week.
Lycoming
took the opening kickoff and drove to the Moravian 13 yard line
with a steady diet of short passes and John Seese
(Stroudsburg, PA) runs. However, on the ninth play of the
drive, quarterback Glenn Smith (Watsontown, PA)
was sacked and fumbled. The Greyhounds took over possession when
Nick Feo recovered the loose ball.
Moravian
then launched a 76 yard drive, capped off by Tyler
McCambridge’s six yard touchdown run with three minutes left
in the first quarter. The Greyhounds did not throw a pass during
the 14 play drive and attempted only six on the day.
After a
three-and-out, Lycoming was forced to punt. But the long snap
sailed very wide and to the right of punter Stephen Deao
(Houtzdale, PA). Deao chased the ball down and wisely
kicked it through the back of the end zone, securing the lesser
of two evils; a safety instead of a touchdown.
The Warrior
defense picked up the pace and held the Greyhounds without a
first down on four straight possessions before halftime. The
defensive stand was highlighted by a sack and a tackle-for-loss
by defensive end Steve Bilous (Camp Hill, PA).
Less than
two minutes into the second half, Lycoming’s Vreeland Wood
(Hamburg, PA) intercepted Moravian quarterback Ryan Rempe
and the Warriors seemed to have momentum. But another sack ended
the blue and gold’s ensuing drive.
On the next
possession, Lycoming’s Tim Mahoney (Southampton, PA)
recovered a McCambridge fumble and the Warriors
translated the turnover into a 27 yard field goal by Mike
Monastra (Havertown, PA). But the Greyhounds continued
pounding the ball, running on eight of their next nine plays on
their way to a second McCambridge touchdown. Moravian
went for two to go up by two touchdowns, but the attempt failed
as Rempe’s pass fell incomplete.
After
Moravian subsequently intercepted Glenn Smith, the third
quarter ended with the Greyhounds driving for their third
touchdown. This one came courtesy of Tyler McCambridge’s
arm, as he threw a halfback pass to Kris Bisci. It was
truly a "trick" play as McCambridge ran the ball 33 times
on the day, while the Greyhounds only completed three passes.
Such was the
final score of the game. Sean Hanna (Lock Haven) came in
as the Warriors quarterback, going 2 for 4 for 23 yards as the
contest came to a close.
Lycoming has
two more games on its schedule. The first is at home, next
weekend at 1:00, versus Albright, while the second is on
November 11 at Susquehanna. If the Warriors win their final two
games, they will not only avoid a losing season, but head coach
Frank Girardi will tie Nebraska legend Tom Osborne
on the all-time college football wins list. Girardi currently
stands at 253 wins, while Osborne retired in 1997 with 255
victories.
