Williamsport, Pa. – The Warriors have all but erased the
memory of their 1-4 start as Lycoming churned out its third
straight victory and evened its season record at 4-4 overall
with a 17-13 victory over Moravian College in Williamsport.
The Warriors’ conference record now stands at 3-4.
Head
coach Frank Girardi took another step towards football
immortality with his 248th career victory. In
his 34th year in blue and gold, Coach Girardi is
only two games shy of becoming the 16th coach in
NCAA history, regardless of division, with at least 250
career victories.
Saturday’s
contest was anything but pretty. The two squads combined 24
penalties and 220 yards lost, nearly as many yards (226
yards) as Moravian managed against Lycoming’s stout
defensive unit. Safety Ryan Repko (Perkiomenville,
Pa./Boyertown) picked up his first interception of the
season at a very critical juncture for the Warriors. After
a 24-yard punt gave the Greyhounds excellent field position,
Repko intercepted Moravian quarterback Jerry Venturino
inside his own five-yard line to prevent a possible score.
Scoring
started right away as Lycoming took the opening kickoff and
drove 76 yards on 11 plays with quarterback Glenn Smith
(Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) capping off the drive on
a one-yard quarterback sneak. It was the first time the
Warriors have scored a first quarter touchdown since the
season’s opening game in a win over Juniata College.
Fumbles
plagued Lycoming throughout the first 30 minutes of play.
The Warriors put the ball on the ground three times and lost
a pair including a miscue at the Lyco 11-yard line by
running back Jim Laky (North Wales, Pa./North Penn).
Greyhound kicker Brian Reckenbeil made the turnover count
with a 26-yard field goal to cut Moravian’s deficit to 7-3.
Kicker
Mike Monastra (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) capped
Lycoming’s longest drive of the game, in terms of time, with
a 19-yard field goal to regain the Warriors’ touchdown
advantage at 10-3. The Warrior possession last 7:25 seconds
of the second quarter and covered 47 yards in 13 plays.
The
Greyhounds would get another three points on a 23-yard field
goal by Reckenbeil with just 29 seconds left before the
intermission. Moravian moved the ball 69 yards on eight
plays in just 1:11.
The
Greyhounds would take their first and only lead of the game
on a three-yard run by running back Marc Panepinto in the
opening minutes of the third quarter.
Laky made
up for his earlier mistake with electric running early in
the fourth quarter. Held for 10 yards on 11 carries in the
first half, Laky busted loose for a 56-yard scamper to the
Moravian four-yard line. He finished what he started on the
next play as he reached the end zone over right tackle for a
17-13 advantage and ultimately the game-winner score.
Lycoming is
next in action on Saturday, November 5, as the Warriors
travel to Albright for a Middle Atlantic Conference match
up. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Reading, Pa.
