Aggies Outlast Warriors in Hard-Hitting Affair

Williamsport, Pa. – Lycoming College fell victim to 10 Aggie fourth quarter points in falling to Delaware Valley College 31-13 at David Person Field on Saturday afternoon.  The victory marked the 15th straight regular season win and 13th consecutive MAC victory for the Aggies.  DVC improved to 4-0 overall, 4-0 in conference play, while Lycoming slipped to 1-2 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC.

Yellow was a popular color on this occasion as the two foes combined for 189 penalty yards including seven personal foul infractions.  Hard hits, crunching blocks, and big plays were game-day signatures of both teams lending strong reactions from the crowd in several instances.

Adam Knoblauch, the Aggies’ highly-touted quarterback, found the going rough as he was intercepted four times on the afternoon.  Junior Matt Murdock (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) set the tone early with the first interception on Knoblauch’s opening attempt of the game.

The Aggies forced the Warriors to punt three plays later and used the ensuing drive to score their first touchdown of the game on a one yard run from tailback Steve Cook.

Lycoming evened the score just 49 ticks into the second quarter when quarterback Sean Hanna (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) escaped pressure and rolled to his left.  While on the run, he connected with receiver Tim Brown (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) behind the secondary for a 64-yard catch-and-run.

Safety Tim Mahoney (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) intercepted Knoblauch on the next drive and gave the Warrior offense excellent field position at the Aggie 25-yard line, but Hanna was intercepted in the end zone by Matt Murphy two plays later.

Delaware Valley regained the lead midway through the second quarter with a two-play drive that covered 56 yards.  Cook scampered 42 yards on an underneath pass from Knoblauch to set up Jake Sheffield’s 14-yard scoring run.

The Aggies increased their lead to 21-7 on its next possession.  Receiver Don Marshall, having been forced to leave the field three plays prior due to a crushing blow from safety Ryan Repko (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown), beat Lycoming’s blitz defense for a 36-yard score on a perfectly-timed wide receiver screen.

Knoblauch went for another long scoring try on the Aggies’ next possession, but cornerback Vreeland Wood (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) rejected the effort with the third interception of Delaware Valley’s quarterback.

The Warriors had a chance to cut into the lead as time expired in the first half, but kicker Mike Monastra’s (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) 37-yard field goal attempt fell a couple of yards short.

After an Aggie missed field goal on the second stanza’s opening drive, Hanna struck with another big play for Lycoming’s offense.  After avoiding pressure and rolling to his right, Hanna squared his body and got enough on the ball to find receiver Jeremy Ebert (Hawley, Pa./Honesdale) completely alone beyond the DVC secondary.  Ebert out-ran an Aggie defender for some 60 yards on his way to an 87-yard touchdown play.

The point after attempt failed leaving the score 21-13 for the Aggies.

The defense did its best to keep the momentum in the offense’s hands when linebacker Kevin LeSage (Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) intercepted Knoblauch for the fourth time, but a pair of sacks, including the third of four from DVC’s Justin Porter, stalled Lycoming’s efforts in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

The Aggies’ took control from thereafter starting with a 14 play 70-yard drive that covered 6:03 of the quarter and led to a 29-yard field goal by Bill Miller.

Sheffield added a 13-yard scoring run with 2:15 left to secure the win for Delaware Valley.

Lycoming is next in action on Saturday, October 1, at FDU-Florham.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
