LYCOMING TO HOST
“LINEMAN’S CHALLENGE”
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– As fall approaches, preseason chatter about high school
football tends to center on the so-called “skill” positions
– quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive back,
linebacker, etc. Rarely would one hear a fan comment on the
fortunes of a team resting on the footwork of the offensive
linemen or the quick hands of the defensive linemen, yet once the
season hits most coaches will tell you the team that wins the
battle at the line-of-scrimmage – wins the game.
Those often
under appreciated linemen will take center stage on Saturday, July
26, at David Person Field, as Lycoming College will host the 3rd
annual Warrior Lineman’s Challenge. The event, co-sponsored by
DeMans Sporting Goods of Brookville, Pa., will begin at noon and
is open to the public. Concessions will be available.
The event will
feature teams of five linemen from local and regional high schools
competing in a series of five team and four individual events that
will showcase the skills and talents of offensive and defensive
linemen. The team events include an obstacle course, tug-of-war,
seven-man sled, shuttle run and 1-man sled relay. Individual
events include bench press, arm wrestling, push ups, and tire
toss.
“We’re very
excited to host this event at the College. It’s great for the
linemen to get an opportunity to show off their skills,” said
Steve Wiser, who is organizing the competition and is the
Warriors’ defensive coordinator. “We’re looking forward to a
fun event this Saturday and hope fans of high school football will
come out and enjoy this unique competition.”
