WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Twelve members of the 2002 Lycoming College football team received special awards, Saturday evening, at the team’s 27th annual banquet held at the Genetti Hotel.

Senior tailback Jared Morris (Canton, PA; Canton) received the Warriors’ highest honor of the evening as the team’s most valuable player. Morris led Lycoming’s offense from the backfield this season, rushing for 1,005 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry and 111.7 yards per game. Morris was also named to the first-team all-conference offense.

Jon Neve (Sr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy) and Matt Mendola (Jr./Dunmore, PA; Dunmore) shared the offensive player of the year honors. Neve, a senior fullback, carried the ball 105 times for 534 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had three 100-yard games early in the season. Mendola was the leader of the Warriors’ offensive line from his position at center. Mendola helped clear the way for Lycoming’s rushing game that averaged 209.1 yards per game and accounted for 26 touchdowns. Both Neve and Mendola were named to the all-conference first-team.

The offensive lineman of the year award went to junior Jay Seagreaves (Allentown, PA; Central Catholic). Seagreaves has been a starter on the Warriors’ offensive line every game of his collegiate career. He anchored the left side of the line in 2002, leading the way for the majority of Lycoming’s rushing plays and protecting the backside of the quarterback on passing downs.

Wide receiver Ray Withelder (Jr./Aston, PA; Sun Valley) was named the team’s most improved offensive player.  Withelder made 20 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns for the Warriors. His 18.6 yards per catch was the highest on the team.

On the defensive side of the ball, seniors Matt Henrich (Huntingdon, PA; Huntingdon) and Chris Roantree (Philadelphia, PA; Father Judge) were named the players of the year. Henrich was the leader of the secondary with four interceptions and a total of eight passes defended. He also tallied 36 tackles in run support. Roantree was the squad’s defensive captain and leader of the front four. He was second on the team with 48 tackles and led the Warriors with five sacks and 16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Both Henrich and Roantree were named to the first-team all-conference defense.

Dustin Mace (Sr./Lykens, PA; Upper Dauphin) received the defensive lineman of the year award. Mace was one of the team’s best run-stoppers with 26 tackles, including 18 solo efforts on the year. He also recorded two sacks and eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Junior defensive end Garrett Zoschg (Emporium, PA; Cameron County) was dubbed the most improved defensive player.  Zoschg made 22 stops for the Warriors in 2002, including one sack and three tackles-for-a-loss. He also recovered two fumbles for Lycoming.

The special teams player of the year award was given to sophomore Bob Miller (New Columbia, PA; Milton). Miller was consistently the first man down the field to cover punts and kickoffs for the Warriors. For the season, he registered 11 tackles – eight solo – and forced one fumble. Miller also saw time at fullback, carrying the ball nine times for 118 yards for a 13.1 yards-per-carry average.

Two special awards were also presented at the banquet. The David Busey Award is given to the player that excels not only on the field but also in the classroom. Steff Chortanoff (Sr./Middletown, PA; Middletown) was the recipient of this award, Chortanoff, an all-conference honorable mention, made 41 tackles as a linebacker this season. He also maintains a grade-point-average of 3.75. The Calistri Award is given to the player that best exemplifies the ideals of a “team-player”. This year’s winner was Jason Brandemarti (Sr./Mantua, NJ; West Deptford). Brandemarti was a key player of the defensive line, making 24 tackles, including two sacks and six tackles-for-a-loss. In his final game at Lycoming, Brandemarti intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.

Head Coach Frank Girardi also announced the captains for the 2003 season. Quarterback Phil Mann (So./Mill Hall, PA; Central Mountain) and center Matt Mendola will captain the offensive unit that graduates just three seniors. Garrett Zoschg will be the leader of the defense that is perennially one of the top units in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
