HONORS FOOTBALL TEAM
ANNOUNCES 2003 CAPTAINS
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – Twelve members of the 2002 Lycoming College football team
received special awards, Saturday evening, at the team’s 27th
annual banquet held at the Genetti Hotel.
Senior
tailback Jared Morris (Canton, PA; Canton) received the
Warriors’ highest honor of the evening as the team’s most
valuable player. Morris led Lycoming’s offense from the
backfield this season, rushing for 1,005 yards and 11 touchdowns.
He averaged 6.3 yards per carry and 111.7 yards per game. Morris
was also named to the first-team all-conference offense.
Jon
Neve (Sr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy)
and Matt Mendola (Jr./Dunmore, PA; Dunmore) shared the
offensive player of the year honors. Neve, a senior fullback,
carried the ball 105 times for 534 yards and seven touchdowns. He
also had three 100-yard games early in the season. Mendola was the
leader of the Warriors’ offensive line from his position at
center. Mendola helped clear the way for Lycoming’s rushing game
that averaged 209.1 yards per game and accounted for 26
touchdowns. Both Neve and Mendola were named to the all-conference
first-team.
The
offensive lineman of the year award went to junior Jay
Seagreaves (Allentown, PA; Central Catholic). Seagreaves has
been a starter on the Warriors’ offensive line every game of his
collegiate career. He anchored the left side of the line in 2002,
leading the way for the majority of Lycoming’s rushing plays and
protecting the backside of the quarterback on passing downs.
Wide
receiver Ray Withelder (Jr./Aston, PA; Sun Valley) was
named the team’s most improved offensive player.
Withelder made 20 catches for 372 yards and three
touchdowns for the Warriors. His 18.6 yards per catch was the
highest on the team.
On
the defensive side of the ball, seniors Matt Henrich
(Huntingdon, PA; Huntingdon) and Chris Roantree
(Philadelphia, PA; Father Judge) were named the players of the
year. Henrich was the leader of the secondary with four
interceptions and a total of eight passes defended. He also
tallied 36 tackles in run support. Roantree was the squad’s
defensive captain and leader of the front four. He was second on
the team with 48 tackles and led the Warriors with five sacks and
16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Both Henrich and Roantree
were named to the first-team all-conference defense.
Dustin
Mace (Sr./Lykens, PA; Upper Dauphin)
received the defensive lineman of the year award. Mace was one of
the team’s best run-stoppers with 26 tackles, including 18 solo
efforts on the year. He also recorded two sacks and eight tackles
behind the line of scrimmage.
Junior
defensive end Garrett Zoschg (Emporium, PA; Cameron County)
was dubbed the most improved defensive player.
Zoschg made 22 stops for the Warriors in 2002, including
one sack and three tackles-for-a-loss. He also recovered two
fumbles for Lycoming.
The
special teams player of the year award was given to sophomore Bob
Miller (New Columbia, PA; Milton). Miller was consistently the
first man down the field to cover punts and kickoffs for the
Warriors. For the season, he registered 11 tackles – eight solo
– and forced one fumble. Miller also saw time at fullback,
carrying the ball nine times for 118 yards for a 13.1
yards-per-carry average.
Two
special awards were also presented at the banquet. The David Busey
Award is given to the player that excels not only on the field but
also in the classroom. Steff Chortanoff (Sr./Middletown, PA;
Middletown) was the recipient of this award, Chortanoff, an
all-conference honorable mention, made 41 tackles as a linebacker
this season. He also maintains a grade-point-average of 3.75. The
Calistri Award is given to the player that best exemplifies the
ideals of a “team-player”. This year’s winner was Jason
Brandemarti (Sr./Mantua, NJ; West Deptford). Brandemarti was a
key player of the defensive line, making 24 tackles, including two
sacks and six tackles-for-a-loss. In his final game at Lycoming,
Brandemarti intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for a
touchdown.
Head
Coach Frank Girardi also announced the captains for the 2003
season. Quarterback Phil Mann (So./Mill Hall, PA; Central
Mountain) and center Matt Mendola will captain the offensive
unit that graduates just three seniors. Garrett Zoschg will be the
leader of the defense that is perennially one of the top units in
the Middle Atlantic Conference.
The
2002 Lycoming College football team finished the season with a 6-3
record to tally the program’s 28th consecutive
winning season.
