THE STORY :
Lycoming got off to a strong start a
week ago with a 54-0 shutout of Delaware Valley College. The
Warriors dominated the Aggies on both sides of the ball and
cleared their benches during the fourth quarter. Lycoming will
look to carry that momentum into today’s contest with Lebanon
Valley College. The Dutchmen enter the game following a 31-10 loss
to Gettysburg College last weekend. Lebanon Valley turned the ball
over three times and gave up 559 yards of total offense.

Today’s game is being broadcast live
on WRAK-AM (1400) in Williamsport, and WRLC-FM (91.7), the
Lycoming College radio station. Ken Sawyer and Bill
Byham will call the action for WRAK. Andy Slawecki and Mike
Dondarski will handle the broadcast for WRLC.

The Warriors opened the 2001 season with
dominating defensive performance in a 40-0 shutout of the Flying
Dutchmen. Lycoming’s defense limited Lebanon Valley to just
three first downs and 12 yards of total offense. The Warriors also
played well on offense, scoring twice through the air and four
times on the ground. Jon Neve and Jared Morris each
scored twice for Lycoming. Tim Deasey set a single-game rushing
record for the Warrior program with 253 yards on 34 carries.

Memorial Stadium, Doylestown, Pa.
For the second consecutive year, the
Lycoming College football team opened the season with a dominating
shutout. The Warriors forced eight turnovers in the game and held
the Aggies to just 60 yards of total offense. They also compiled
327 yards rushing and scored eight touchdowns. Jon Neve and
Jared Morris each ran for 105 yards in the game.
Quarterback Phil Mann completed 8-of-15 passes for 106
yards and one touchdown. Matt Henrich led the defense and
tied a school record with three interceptions. Steff Chortanoff
led the team with five tackles, and Zach Latsha tallied
three sacks.
LYCOMING’S OFFENSE:
The Warriors’ offense got off to a strong start last week,
piling up 441 yards and scoring 54 points. Lycoming recorded 327
yards and seven touchdowns through the rushing atack and another
114 yards and one touchdown through the passing game. Jon Neve
and Jared Morris each rushed for 105 yards. Neve also
scored two touchdowns as did Bob Miller. Phil Mann completed
8-of-15 passes for 106 yards, inclduing a 23-yard touchdown pass
to Brandon Johnson.
LEBANON VALLEY’S DEFENSE:
The Flying Dutchmen defense yielded 559 yards of total offense
last week – 301 on the ground and 258 through the air. Lebanon
Valley did force three fumbles by Gettysburg. Linebacker Adam
Frantz led the team with 14 tackles and forced a fumble.
Defensive end Donald Carter tallied 10 tackles on the
afternoon and forced two fumbles. Brian Oberdick led the
secondary with nine tackles and two passes defended.
LEBANON VALLEY’S OFFENSE: Lebanon
Valley’s offense tallied 195 total yards last week – 148
passing and 47 rushing. Dallas Noll completed 15-of-40
passes for 143 yards and one touchdown, while throwing two
interceptions. Scott Marek was his top receiver catching
six passes for 63 yards. Pete Henning led the rushing
attack with 59 yards on 12 carries.
LYCOMING’S DEFENSE:
Lycoming’s defense picked up right where they left of last year
stifling Delaware Valley’s offense last week. The Warriors
limited the Aggies to just seven yards rushing and 53 yards
passing for a total of 60 yards of offense. The defense also
played takeaway forcing eight turnovers in the game. Matt
Henrich tied a school record with three interceptions, while
also making three tackles. Tim Schmidt and Adam Bickford
also recorded interceptions. Steff Chortanoff and Luke
Sterling led the squad with five tackles apiece. Zach
Latsha added four tackles, including three sacks.
MATCH-UP TO WATCH:
Lycoming’s rushing attack versus Lebanon
Valley’s defensive front. The Warriors featured a diversified
running game in week one with 11 different players getting at
least one carry and four running backs scoring at least one
touchdown. The Flying Dutchmen struggled against the run last week
giving up more than 300 yards to Gettysburg and allowing 5.7 yards
per carry.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Senior defensive back Matt Henrich
was selected as the MAC Defensive Player of the Week for his
performance against Delaware Valley in week one. Henrich tied a
Lycoming record by intercepting three passes in the game. He also
recorded three tackles and defended a total of four passes.
Henrich led the team in interceptions last season with six.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES:
Lycoming has garnered national attention
entering the 2002 season. The Warriors have been listed in a
number of preseason polls, including: 10th in Sports
Illustrated, 13th in Street & Smith’s, 15th in Don
Hansen’s Football Gazette, and 18th on D3football.com.
FOND MEMORIES: Warrior
head coach Frank Girardi has fond memories of Arnold Field
at Lebanon Valley. In 1998, he won his 200th career football game
when Lycoming defeated the Dutchmen 47-14.
EARLY SEASON RANKINGS:
Lycoming is currently ranked 16th in the
nation by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Other MAC
schools to make the top-40 are Widener at number three and Wilkes
at 38th. The Football Gazette was the only organization to
release a poll after the first week of play. The American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) will release their first poll on
Tuesday, September 17.
OPENING WITH A SHUTOUT: Last
week’s shutout of Delaware Valley marked the 10th time Lycoming
has opened their season by pitching a shutout. It was also the
second consecutive year they have accomplished the feat. The only
other time the Warriors have recorded shutouts in back-to-back
season openers was in 1975 and 1976.
FAMILIAR FOE: Lebanon
Valley head coach Mike Silecchia is very familiar with his
counterpart across the field having served as an assistant under Frank
Girardi during the 1995,’96, and ‘97 seasons. Silecchia
was responsible for the Warriors’ offensive line.
