LOCKOUT/TAGOUT POLICY
I. Purpose
The purpose of lockout/tagout rules is to provide a safer
environment for employees working on machinery and equipment. The
lockout procedure is used to block the flow of energy from the
power source to the piece of equipment being repaired or serviced.
II. Compliance
All employees must comply with lockouts imposed by authorized
employees. No employee is to attempt to energize any equipment
that is locked out for maintenance reasons.
III. Sequence of Lockout
- Notify employees in the effected area that the equipment will
be shut down and locked out for maintenance or servicing.
- Turn off equipment and disconnect the energy source. Release
any residual energy.
- Use your own lock to lock out the energy source. If more than
one person is working on the equipment, a multiple lockout
adapter should be used, with each person using his own lock.
Never borrow or depend on a coworker's lock.
- If a piece of equipment cannot be locked out, use a warning
tag at the disconnection point.
- Always test the equipment to make sure it is successfully
locked out. Be aware of any other energy sources for that piece
of equipment and lock them out, too.
- When repairs and maintenance are completed, make sure that
other employees are safe; remove tools, locks, and tags before
restoring energy.
