WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College Choir will appear with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9. Op. 125 in D Minor” conducted by Gerardo Edelstein on Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m., in the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport.

The piece was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. During the performance, nearly 200 singers comprised of the Lycoming Choir, the State College Choral Society and soloists Meredith Mecum, Lorie Gratis, Tim LeFebvre and Jerry Grahame will join the orchestra for the final movement, which features words taken from "Ode to Joy," a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer.

“This will be the first time the Lycoming College Choir has appeared with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra,” says Dr. Fred Thayer, professor of music and director of choirs at Lycoming. “The choir is extremely excited for the opportunity.”

As part of the concert, titled “Austro-German Connections,” the symphony will also perform “Adagietto” from G. Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5” and F.J. Haydn’s “Cello Concert in C Major” with soloist Andrew Rammon, an instructor of music at Lycoming.
Read the Sun-Gazette on article Lycoming's Bicentennial Celebration

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College, one of the 50 oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, will hold its Bicentennial Charter Day Celebration on Saturday, April 2. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. in the Recreation Center with a cake and ice cream social, proclamation presentations by state and local officials and a fireworks display. The event will mark 200 years to the day that Williamsport Academy, Lycoming’s predecessor institution, was chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The College thanks Pete ’60 and Carol Sides and the Robert M. Sides Family Music Center for their generous support of the Charter Day Celebration. The event is open to the public.

Lycoming, recognized as a national liberal arts and sciences college, is listed by U.S. News and World Report as a Tier 1 institution. Its student to faculty ratio is 13-1, and 91 percent of the 85 full-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. The College offers more than 30 academic majors and grants both the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees. The College has more than 16,000 alumni worldwide.

The institution has been coeducational since its inception. The origins of the College date back to 1812, with the founding of Williamsport Academy. When incorporated, it was the lone school serving a lumber port in a thriving community of approximately 350 people.

The Charter Day event marks the beginning of the College’s bicentennial celebration, which will be observed throughout the 2011-12 academic year.

College hosts annual Black History Month Dinner

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Nearly 70 campus and community members attended Lycoming College’s 6th Annual Black History Month Dinner. Lycoming alumnus Dr. Walter Dunston served as guest speaker for the Feb. 5 gathering, where he shared stories about his family’s long and proud tradition of becoming dentists and his own 30-plus years in the field.

Several of Dunston’s remarks were directed toward the many students in attendance. He told them that in order to be successful in life, they must take risks. He added that success would come with using common sense and having will power and self-control.

“Thank God for something every day,” Dunston told the students. “Learn to focus on what you are doing. Follow your dreams, no matter how long they take. It’s not the journey, but the destination.”

Under his leadership, Lycoming has seen record numbers in applicants, academic measures of entering classes such as SAT scores and high school class rank, and the percentage of out-of-state students. He also contributes more broadly to his field through scholarship readings for the Mitrani Foundation and the Marguerite Carl Smith Scholarship. But it is his infectious enthusiasm for and commitment to the life of the College and its students that make him well-recognized and well-respected on campus. His is a familiar face at home and away sporting events, theatre productions, concerts and other student performances and programs.
Alumnus and English professor to hold Homecoming book event

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - James Minick, a 1986 graduate of Lycoming College, and Dr. Andrew Leiter, assistant professor of English at the College, will participate in the Lycoming Authors book event Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m., in the College Archives, Academic Center. Minick and Leiter will give brief readings of their work and chat with guests during the event, which is part of Homecoming and Reunion Weekend.

Minick published his memoir, “The Blueberry Years: A Memoir of Farm and Family,” in August. It captures how Minick and his wife, Sarah, both schoolteachers, fulfilled their dream of owning a blueberry farm which they operated for more than a decade.

At 3:30 p.m., Minick will also hold a more in-depth, fireside discussion of his book on the first floor of Snowden Library.

Leiter’s book, “In the Shadow of the Black Beast: African American Masculinity in Harlem and Southern Renaissances,” was published earlier this year by Louisiana State University Press. It marks the first book-length study of the sexually violent African-American man as a literary phenomenon. The “black beast” theme was a fundamental element of writers from both Harlem and Southern Renaissances who explored its psychological, cultural and social ramifications.

Leiter’s teaching specialty is 20th century American literature. He has particular interest in the textual intersections of racial representations by white and African-American authors.

Lycoming ranked in top tier by U.S. News and World Report; 11th nationally for graduation rate

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Lycoming College has been recognized as a Tier 1 institution by U.S. News & World Report in its 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.” According to U.S. News, the nation’s 266 liberal arts colleges focus almost exclusively on undergraduate education and award at least 50 percent of their degrees in the arts and sciences. Bucknell, Dickinson, Gettysburg and Swarthmore are among other Pennsylvania institutions in the Tier 1 group.

In addition, Lycoming is ranked 11th in the nation among liberal arts and science institutions in graduation rate when comparing actual graduation rate with the predicted rate. While the vast majority of Lycoming’s students graduate in four years, data from the U.S. Department of Education also confirms Lycoming’s six-year graduation rate of 74 percent to be very strong when compared to other schools. Nationally, the average six-year graduation rate at all private non-profit colleges and universities is 54 percent while Pennsylvania’s privates average 65 percent. The average six-year graduation rate reported for all public universities in Pennsylvania is 53 percent.

“Lycoming’s high graduation rate is a testament to the good work of the faculty and staff members who see that our students get the attention and resources they need to succeed in the classroom,” said James Spencer, Lycoming’s vice president for admissions and financial aid. “And, it helps that Lycoming attracts committed, hard-working students.”

Alumni enjoy a "suite" evening at Campbell's Field

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - More than 20 alumni and guests enjoyed the second annual "Suite" Event at the Camden Riversharks on Aug. 4. Like last year, Jack Tarditi '63 hosted the group in a ballpark suite at Campbell's Field, Camden, N.J. Attendees got a full evening of baseball as the Long Island Ducks took the Riversharks into extra innings in the Atlantic League match-up. The Riversharks eventually prevailed with a two-run walk-off homer. Alumni were also treated to a visit in the suite from mascot Blueper.

But the highlight of the evening was the intergenerational interaction among alumni, representing decades from the '50s through the '00s. Among the attendees were John Lewis '75 and his son, Jake, a rising Lycoming senior and member of the cross-country team, who earned a place on the Middle Atlantic Conference's Academic Honor Roll this past season.

Lycoming recognized by Princeton Review as one of the "Best Northeastern Colleges"

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College has been recognized as one of the best institutions of higher learning in the Northeast according to The Princeton Review. The education services company selected Lycoming as one of 218 institutions it profiles in its "Best in the Northeast" section on its web site feature 2011 Best Colleges by Region that was recently posted on www.PrincetonReview.com. It also profiles the College in its book, "The Best Northeastern Colleges: 2011 Edition."

"There are more great schools in the Northeast than in any part of the country," said James Spencer, vice president of admissions and financial aid at Lycoming. "It's flattering that Lycoming is listed alongside such schools as Bucknell, Dickinson, Lafayette and Lehigh."

The 218 colleges The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Northeast" web site designations and "The Best Northeastern Colleges" book are located in 11 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the District of Columbia. A total of 623 colleges were named "regional best(s)," which represent about 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges.

"We chose Lycoming and the other terrific schools we recommend as our ''regional best'' colleges primarily for their excellent academic programs," says Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president for publishing. "From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences at them on our 80-question student survey for this project."

The Princeton Review survey for this project asks students to rate their own schools on several issues - from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food - and answer questions about themselves, their fellow students and their campus life.

The Princeton Review, headquartered in Framingham, Mass., with editorial offices in New York City and test preparation locations across the country and abroad, is not affiliated with Princeton University and it is not a magazine.
