Schedule of Events and Program Fall Semester, 2008

The FYRST Program is a series of fun events and educational programs for Lycoming freshmen. Programming is geared toward helping freshmen adjust to college life; it includes academic support and introduction to community living and responsibility. There are also many social activities which help freshmen meet new friends and bond as the Class of 2012.

In addition to these events, RAs also offer programs for their floor communities.


Sunday, August 24  “Outdoor Movie- Iron Man”

9:00 p.m., Quad 

Grab a blanket and come out to the Quad (in case of rain, we will relocate to the Rec Center).  The Outdoor Movie is sponsored by CAB, Student Programs, and Residential Life.

Monday, August 25  “Ice Cream Sundae Monday”

9:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Congratulations, freshmen, you have just completed your first day of class!  Come out of your room, make a sundae, relax, and meet other members of the Class of 2012.

 

Wednesday, August 27  “Involvement Fair and Picnic”

4:30 until 6:30 p.m., Quad               

Student Programs and the Community Service Center join forces to provide this opportunity for you to talk with representatives of the College’s various organizations.  Picnic, too! (In case of rain, we will relocate to the Rec. Center).

Thursday, August 28   “Pack the Park Night”

7:00 p.m., Bowman Field                 

Get off campus to watch the Williamsport Crosscutters at Historic Bowman Field. Tickets are free!  Lycoming College students at the game will have a chance to be chosen to play the Tuition Toss Game after the conclusion of the baseball game for a chance to win $10,000.

 

Sunday, August 31  “Campus Carnival”

Noon until 6:00 p.m., Quad            

The Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development is sponsoring a Carnival on the Quad.  Join in on the fun! (In case of rain, we will relocate to the Rec. Center).

Tuesday, September 2  “Getting Involved”

Upper-class representatives from volunteer organizations and the SSLC will be on hand to answer all of your questions and engage you in the wonderful opportunities to get involved on campus!

Wednesday, September 10  “Wise Options: Who We Are and What We Do”

Learn about the services offered by Wise Options, as well as information on dating violence and sexual assault as it relates to the campus setting.

Sara Hillis, Assistant Director of Student Programs/ Fraternity and Sorority Life will hold a dynamic presentation concerning hazing on college campuses.

Join Townsend Velkoff and Stephanie Fortin,  Lycoming’s Counselors, as they touch upon independence issues, relationship changes, and other choices that you will be facing during your first semester living in your new home away from home.

Wednesday, October 1  “Registering for Next Semester Already?”

8:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Assistant Dean for Freshmen Regina Collins will talk to you about registering for the Spring Semester and changing academic advisors.  She will also discuss early assessment (midterm) reports and how to access them on Webadvisor.  Come spend some time with your Freshman Dean.

Thursday, October 9  “Stress Management”

Feeling worked up?  Perhaps you are feeling a little overwhelmed with schoolwork, your job, your parents??  Counseling Services will be discussing stress and healthy ways to manage it. 

 

Thursday, October 16  “The Roommate Game”

9:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Organized by your RAs and modeled after “The Newlywed Game,” this program will be a great opportunity for roommates to find out how well they really know each other.  This program will tackle the issues that will help you get the most out of your residential experience at Lycoming.  By living in a community, you not only get to know other cool people…you also get to know yourself better.

Friday, October 24  “Harry Potter Night”

9:00 p.m., Snowden Library            

Sponsored by the Library, Residential Life and the FYRST Program, Harry Potter Night will be an evening filled with lots of Harry Potter fun!  There will be a costume contest, games, fortune telling, and great food and prizes!

 

Thursday, October 30  “Halloween Party”

9:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Relax and join your classmates for a Freshmen Halloween Party.  Wear a costume if you want.  Prizes will be awarded for the most creative costume and for the scariest costume.

Monday, November 10  “An Evening with the Dean”

8:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Dr. Dan Miller, the Dean of Student Affairs, joins you in an open forum session.  Come dialogue with Dr. Miller about things that are important to you here at Lycoming.  How is your Lycoming experience so far?  Do you feel a part of the residential community?  Is College life what you thought it would be?

Friday, December 5   “Snowden ‘til Two

9:00 p.m.- 2:00 a.m., Library           

Snowden Library will be offering students a late night in the library to prepare for final exams and final papers.  Last year this event was a great success, with over 450 students participating!  “Snowden ‘til Two” - the place on campus for review, study, and relaxation…Study sessions with professors!  Academic Resource Center tutors!  Free refreshments and lots of relaxing activities!

Monday, December 8  “Freshman Class Christmas Party”

Dean Regina Collins and the Officers of the Class of 2012 will sponsor this holiday party.  Relax, enjoy some snacks, and take a break from exam preparations.

Wednesday, December  10  “FYRST Christmas Party”

8:00 p.m., Skeath Lounge                 

Join Leslie Kelly, Coordinator of the FYRST Program, and the freshmen RAs for another study break.  Snacks, beverages, friends, and relaxing…exactly what you need!

Sondra Stipcak, RN, Director of Lycoming’s Health Services, will remind you that being physically and mentally fit and maintaining a healthy diet are very important to your well-being and academic success.  Her approach to teaching about a healthy lifestyle: a “Hollywood Squares” format that is fun and interactive format!
