If you are new to the residence halls, click here! Lycoming College believes residence hall living is an important part of the college experience and the learning that occurs in the halls is an essential ingredient in the growth, development and education of our students.
As a residential college, Lycoming College requires all full-time students to live in college housing and participate in the college board plan each semester of the academic year that they are enrolled. Married students, students residing with their parents within a 40 mile radius, students living with their dependents, and students 23 years or older may request to be exempted from this policy. Such requests should be submitted in writing to the Dean of Student Affairs at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the semester that students are requesting permission to live off campus. We do not provide housing for students who have dependent children living with them.
Residence Hall Community Defined
The Residential Life Office is committed to the development of positive learning communities within the residence halls. Professional and student staff are trained to involve residents in decisions that affect their living environment. Student input is sought through the Residence Life Advisory Board, surveys, and conversations with residents when plans are being developed for the residence halls. When you want to be involved there are many ways to get your message into the decision making process.
On a smaller scale, each resident is a part of a residence hall floor community. This membership guarantees that you will have input into decisions about your living environment. The floor will begin the year by developing a Community Agreement with the assistance of the RA or House Manager. The Community Agreement is a compromise of the shared opinions of community members. This is established as the standard for acceptable behavior on the floor, within College and Residential Life guidelines.
When students want to be involved, they have many opportunities to make changes in their community. The students who complain about the way things are usually have not taken the time to give their input when decisions were being made. Make a commitment to be involved and you will be able to see changes happen. This is what community means to the Residential Life Office.
Community Agreements and Proposals
Establishing open communication about expectations is a very important part of developing a positive community environment. For this reason, Community Agreements are developed by each residence hall floor at the beginning of the academic year. The RA or House Manager will assist residents with the process of developing a written set of standards, agreed upon by a consensus of residents, about issues that affect the floor/hall living environment, such as guest use of bathrooms and confrontation. All parts of the Community Agreement must be congruent with College and Residential Life policy.
A Community Proposal is a written document outlining a request to the Director of Residential Life and must be signed by all community residents. Past community proposals have concerned facilities issues, quiet hours, and specialty floor designations. |
