Housing Lottery 2012

Below is important information regarding the Housing Lottery process for selection of 2012-2013 Campus Housing. Returning students who need to select housing should pay close attention to all deadlines and instructions for obtaining housing.

Overview

Each spring the Office of Residential Life conducts a Housing Lottery to allow returning students to select housing for the upcoming academic year. Current students (both residents and commuters) wishing to obtain campus housing must follow all of the steps listed in the section below entitled "Important Steps for Lottery Participants" in order to be eligible to select housing in the lottery process.

  • Room selection is determined by lottery numbers which are assigned randomly by a computer program. Numbers are grouped according to credit hours earned (as recorded by the Registrar's Office) at the end of the previous fall semester (fall 2011).
  • Students with the lowest lottery number have priority for placement and have the option to "pull" in other roommates (see exceptions below).
  • All students wishing to select a room should be present during the appropriate lottery and must have the necessary number of roommate(s) to fill the room. If a student cannot be present, the roommate(s) must bring a completed and signed Proxy Form (see Quick Links below) for the absent student(s).
  • Students who do not participate in the lottery but still want housing should contact the Residential Life Office to be added to a waiting list for placement after the lottery is completed.

Note: the number of students typically exceeds the number of rooms available during the lottery. Spaces become available over the summer.  All students who did not get a room during the lottery will receive assignments before returning to campus in August; room assignment information will be posted on Web Advisor after July 15.

Important Steps For Lottery Participants

1. Pay $100 enrollment deposit.

Make certain your enrollment deposit of $100 is paid to the Business Office by Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

  • Payment of this deposit confirms a student's intention to return for the following academic year.
  • All students (both commuter and resident) must pay this deposit.
  • All students who pay the deposit and complete Step 2. by the deadline (both commuter and resident) will be assigned a lottery number and will be eligible to participate in the housing lottery.

Note: If you do not pay your enrollment deposit and clear your student account by the deadlines, you will not be guaranteed a computer generated lottery number. If you pay your enrollment deposit and clear your student account after lottery numbers are run and posted, regardless of the number of credits completed, your number will be manually assigned at the end of the computer generated list in the order which we receive notification from the Business Office that the deposit has been paid. Failure to pay the enrollment deposit/clear student account prohibits participation in the lottery.

2. Clear your student account.

Confirm with the Business Office that your student account is up to date and clear of all holds by Friday, March 2, 2012 at 12noon.

Note: Even if you complete Step 1. but do not clear your student account by the deadline, you will not be guaranteed a computer generated lottery number. If you clear your student account after lottery numbers are run and posted, regardless of the number of credits completed, your number will be manually assigned at the end of the computer generated list in the order which we receive notification from the Business Office that the deposit has been paid. Failure to pay the enrollment deposit/clear student account prohibits participation in the lottery.

3. Complete the Housing Agreement on-line through Web-Advisor.

It must be completed a minimum of 24 hours before the lottery session you wish to attend.

4. Decide what type of housing you would like.

Choose the location where you wish to live and find the appropriate number of roommates for the space.

Note: Carefully read through all of the "Housing Options" information listed below. For room style and locations, floor plans of all residence halls, rooms, apartments and The Commons can be viewed by current students by using log-in information provided by the Office of Residential Life at the start of the lottery process. For up to date availability of all spaces see "2012 Available Spaces"(see Quick Links above). As rooms are taken the "Available Spaces" list will be updated.

With the exception of Forrest Hall singles, individuals must have the appropriate number of roommates to fill the room in order to participate in a lottery. All rooms must be filled to capacity at the time of the lottery. If you cannot find a roommate and would like to receive information on other students looking for a roommate, please complete the "Looking for a Roommate" registration form (see Quick Links above).

5. Complete any necessary online applications.

These forms can be found below along with descriptions of the various room options. Follow all instructions and meet all appropriate deadlines.

6. Attend the appropriate room selection session.

Consult the 2012 Lottery Dates and Times Schedule.

  • Attend the appropriate session based on lottery #.
  • Attend with all roommates and/or Proxy forms.
  • Bring your College ID to the lottery session.

Housing Options


College Apartments/The Commons

All rising senior and junior students are welcome and encouraged to apply. Eligibility is based on the following 3 criteria:

  • 76 credits at the end of fall 2011.
  • 2.25 GPA.
  • No violations of the Code of Conduct within the previous 3 semesters (fall 11, spring 11, fall 10). 

Applicants who do not meet the criteria will be initially denied but are encouraged to file an appeal which will be reviewed by a committee. The appeal process is outlined on the application page (see link below).

Note: Students may only "pull" roommates into a unit who have also applied and been approved to live in the Apartments or Commons.

Single Rooms

There are 46 single rooms, each adjoined by a bathroom and designated by gender in Forrest Hall. Rooms are assigned through an application process.

  • Rooms will be assigned by the Housing Coordinator based on lottery number from lowest to highest.
  • Students will be notified on Friday, March 2nd whether they have or have not successfully obtained a room.

Note: a lower lottery number will NOT be able to "pull" in a higher number in the adjoining room. However, once the Forrest lottery is complete and students are notified of their room assignments maps will be posted in the Housing Coordinator's Office (Rich Hall, first floor) for student review. Students will be allowed to move within the building in order to choose a "suitemate", but all residents affected by the change must agree to the move.

Continuous Occupancy

This option allows one or more students to remain in the room they currently occupy.

  • Each current occupant may pull only ONE additional student into the room, and must fill the room to capacity. (eg.- 1 new occupant, 1 current occupant to a 2 person room; 1 new occupant, 2 current occupants to a 3 person room; 1 new occupant, 3 current occupants to a 4 person room; or 2 new occupants, 2 current occupants to a 4 person room.)
  • Asbury, Skeath, and Forrest Hall (single rooms), The Commons and the Apartments are not eligible for Continuous Occupancy. Occasionally additional rooms on campus are not eligible for this option because they have been re-designated for the coming year (i.e.- rooms set aside for freshman housing or newly approved cluster housing.)
  • At least one current resident must come in person to request Continuous Occupancy. Any additional current resident(s) wishing to remain in the room and any new roommate(s) must appear at the same time either in person or by proxy.

Continuous Occupancy selection is:

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 9:00AM-3:00PM in the Housing Coordinator's office, 1st floor Rich Hall.

Note: Continuous occupancy also does not mean you may leave your belongings in this location during the summer.

 

Choice Floors

These areas are set aside for students wishing to live in a substance-free area (LIFE), a creative arts area (CAS), or a Fraternity/Sorority floor. Room assignments will be determined by floor members and/or the house manager. Students wishing to live in one of these areas should contact the Housing Coordinator for information.

Greek floor housing roster submission deadline was Friday, March 2, 2012 by 12:00noon.

 

LIFE & CAS roster submission deadline is:
Tuesday, March 20, 2012 by 12:00noon.

 

Cluster Areas

Students who are part of a recognized student club or organization may request to cluster together. (Examples of potential clusters are: a fraternity or sorority without a floor, community service organizations, academic clubs, etc.)

  • For application forms and information regarding the application process, contact the Housing Coordinator, Office of Residential Life.
  • Applications are reviewed by a committee.
  • Applicants will be notified of their approval/denial on March 21st.

The Cluster Application submission deadline is:

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 by 12:00noon.

 

Triples/Quads/Mini-Suites

These rooms offer students the opportunity to live together in groups of 3-4.

  • All rooms must be filled to capacity at the time of selection. (eg.-to select a 4 person space, there must be 4 residents in attendance, either in person or by proxy.)
  • The student with the lowest lottery number can "pull" other roommates into the room.
  • In Triple/Quad rooms a student can "pull" in all roommates.
  • In Mini-Suite rooms a student can "pull" roommates into both rooms.

Note: the list below indicates rooms that qualify for this lottery. Some rooms will ultimately not be part of the lottery because they may be reserved for incoming freshmen or registered clusters.   • Triple Rooms: Three students/one room.
    • Crever 121, 214, 221, 314, 321
    • Rich 107, 121, 207, 221, 307, 321
    • Forrest 102
    • Wesley 10
  • Quad: Four students/one room.
    • Crever 105, 110, 205, 210, 212, 305, 310, 312
    • Wesley 116, 220
  • Mini-Suites: Four students/two adjoining rooms. Rooms are joined by a walkway (not a bathroom) between the rooms.
    • Wesley 105, 113, 205, 212, 224, 233, 312, 313, 316, 321, 329

Triple/Quad/Mini-Suite Lottery is:

Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 4:00-6:00pm in Rich Hall 1st floor.

Double Rooms and Suite-Style Rooms

Unless a current resident has opted for "Continuous Occupancy" these rooms are available for selection during the "General Lottery". See Quick Links above for a list of spaces that will be available in this lottery.

  • Double Rooms: Two person rooms in upper class halls on floors/wings with community bathrooms which are designated by gender.
    • These rooms are selected during general lottery.
    • Rooms are located in Wesley Hall and Williams Garden level.
    • Students may "pull" a roomate into these rooms.
  • Suite-Style Rooms: Two (two or three person) rooms which are joined by a bathroom.
    • Rooms are selected separately in general lottery sessions.
    • Students may "pull" roommates into one room, but not into the adjoining room.
    • Adjoining rooms are designated by gender
    • Floors/wings in Crever and Williams are co-ed;
    • All rooms in Rich Hall are female.
    • Any adjoining three person rooms not selected during the triple/quad lottery (see above section) will also be available for selection during the General Lottery.

General Lottery sessions are:

Monday, March 26 and Wednesday, March 28, 2012 from 4:00-7:00PM, Rich Hall 1st floor.

Important Note:

After Wednesday, March 28, 2012, returning students who have not selected 2012-2013 housing by participating in any of the above lottery sessions must contact the Housing Coordinator in the Office of Residential Life to coordinate housing for the upcoming academic year.
