The major provides training in both theoretical and applied psychology. It is designed to meet the needs of students seeking careers in psychology or other natural or social sciences. It also meets the needs of students seeking a better understanding of human behavior as a means of furthering individual and career goals in other areas. Psychology majors and others are urged to discuss course selections in psychology with members of the department to help ensure appropriate course selection.
Students are now able to choose between a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts)and a B.S. (Bachelor of Science). The B.S. degree has a requires more experience in research methodology - both within the field of psychology and outside the field in other disciplines.
Major
A B.A. major consists of 32 semester hours in psychology, including:
- PSY 110: Introductory Psychology
- PSY 431: Experimental Psychology
- PSY 432: Sensation and Perception
- PSY 436: Personality Theory
- MATH 123: Introduction to Statistics
A B.S. major must complete all of the requirements for the B.A. degree and in addition, must complete the following:
- one additional lab course from PSY 324 or 333
- three natural science courses from at least two departments from the following list: BIO 110, 111, 323, 338; CHEM 110, 111; PHYS 225, 226
- one additional computation course from the following list: CPTR 125; MATH 128, 214; ECON 230; 441
- An individual studies or honors project in psychology or, with department permission, an internship or the practicum in psychology
Minor
A minor in psychology consists of 20 semester hours in psychology including:
- PSY 110: Introductory Psychology
- 4 other psychology courses (two of which must be numbered 200 or above and one lab course [PSY 324, 333, 431, or 432])
