Actuarial Math Major
Welcome to the Actuarial Mathematics webpage. Matt Steffanelli here, from Stockton, New Jersey. I attended one of New Jersey's largest high schools, but as I visited many college campuses it became clear I would feel more comfortable at a small school. It's not that I couldn't have survived at a Rutgers or a Penn State; I just knew that I would be a better student and have more opportunities at a place like Lycoming.
When I began as a freshman I wasn't really sure of a major. I did well academically at Hunterdon Central High so I was confident I could do well in a number of areas at Lycoming. It was through conversations with professors like Dr. Sprechini and Dr. Peluso that convinced me to look at actuarial math. I like the challenge of the math and business classes. It also keeps me focused knowing that Lyco actuarial grads enjoy a 100% placement rate.
Sports are also a big part of my life. I play mid-field on the Warrior lacrosse team. It''s a lot of work but I enjoy the competitiveness and hanging out with my teammates. Last year we finished second in the conference but this year we have our sights set on a MAC championship and the NCAA play-offs.
As I look ahead I have already started working with my advisor to find an actuarial internship for next summer. Lycoming has many connections with companies wishing to hire summer interns. I'd like to get my foot in the door by gaining experience with a large insurance company like Aetna or Met Life. I may even pursue grad school, but until then, I have a lot of living to do.
As you explore your college options I highly recommend that you visit our campus and meet some of our people. Lycoming is a great school with awesome professors.
