Biology Major, Chemistry Minor
Hi! I'm Champ, the mascot of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. If you've ever been to PNC Field to see a baseball game you'll immediately recognize me. My alias is Jarrod Chipp. And when not entertaining crowds by dancing on top of dugouts or poking fun at umpires, you'll often find me in the Heim Science Center because I'm a biology major and chemistry minor.
Like many students here, I chose Lycoming because I wanted a small college with a friendly, residential environment. Lycoming is an institution where students and professors alike really enjoy interacting with each other and where the level of personal attention is incredible. As a senior, I'm still amazed on the first day of each semester when I see one of my professor's home phone numbers on the syllabus.
I've always found the sciences interesting, particularly the areas of human anatomy and physiology. After beginning my coursework in the sciences and seeking advice from my advisor, Dr. Gabe, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Gabe has not only been advising pre-med students for over 25 years, he is also one of the funniest, most energetic, and most caring professors you could hope to meet.
I've been afforded some amazing opportunities through the College's bio program. In my sophomore year microbiology course, we found and cultured a novel bacterium that had previously been undiscovered. We named the new species Sejongia lycomia (after Lycoming, of course). And when the research is published in scientific literature, I will be recognized as one of the contributing authors!
In addition to a summer internship with my family physician, I also participated in Susquehanna Health System's volunteer program in the Emergency Room of the Williamsport Hospital. It was a real eye-opener but an incredibly valuable experience. So what lies ahead for Jarrod Chipp? Other than trying out for the big league as the Philly Phanatic, I plan to attend med school. Applications will soon be submitted and I will be biting my nails awaiting the decisions. Check back often...I'll keep this page updated. In the meantime, good luck with your college search. Make sure you put Lyco on your "must see" list.
